Do you have 1 to 2 Inches of pedal free play?

What is your timing at 1500, 2500,and 3000rpm. Late timing will cause over heating I've Seen it many times in brand x

Check lower hose for sucking shut? Does it have a spring in it

Check for retainer to valve seal clearance

I have used the studs in all small blocks with no problem

Do a cylinder leak down test just put air in cylinder with valves closed ,you can level engine and fill block with water and look for bubbles coming from water jacket with intake off ,on another note make sure your intake bolts are not to long and bottom out in the end holes they may feel...

Did you retorque intake manifold check for vacuum leak around runner those metal gaskets can leak over time they usually leak on the end cylinders

They were made in the 70's just for 2barrel ,cast iron racing classes for w2 heads and are very rare
