Driveshaft

My Dusters driveshaft formally pulled family duty on a 4 door fury, at least the grease pencil on it says so. Someone had it cut to size and welded, only thing is sounds like its full of sand, assumeign its the welding slag, car gets a nice harmonic vibration at high speed and sure all that slag isn't helping. For a mild 340 street driven is it worth it to go aftermarket aluminum shaft or just a stocker?

A stock drive shaft should work fine for your 340,sounds like your drive shaft is out of balance.Do you have somewhere to take it to get it checked?

I just had my shaft on my 70 Duster just rebalanced and straightened
it took a rear u-joint dump on the highway at about 80mph. One of the caps just walked off. A good drive train specialty shop should be able to
fix you right up. The only problem I had was my front yolk was junk, my
car is 4 spd. and it was hard to find a yolk that would fit.
You could also try some of the boneyards I have used to get a correct
drive shaft for a duster. Try www.wildcatmopars.com or wildcatautowrecking I can't remember which it is they are out of Oregon and pretty reasonable with shipping and all. :thumleft:

Yeah I've delt with Wildcat ebfore but shipping to Canada for a driveshaf tmight be scary. Theres no place in town to have the driveshaft checked, plus the main issue it has to be cut apart to get the slag inside it out, serious sounds like its full of sand can hear it when you turn the rear wheels by hand. Was hopeign I could find soemone in alberta with parts, but jsut lookign for opinions from stock to aftermarket, for the cash think stock will do.

From all the other issues you have had with your car , I am guessing but I wonder if they welded the end back on the driveshaft correctly. If they are out of phase it will vibrate for sure. The ears that the u-joint goes into must be exactly in line on the shaft. Or the shaft may be bent as well.

There are a few options. You could get one made up in edmonton. Or you could find another used one (or fix yours) and get it cut to length and rebalanced. Does it have the big or the small u-joints? I have a list of the actual length required for your car somewhere that I could dig up. A buddy of mine might be able to the machine/welding work for a small fee. I will ask him but he is off right now cause his dad passed away.

What are the different sizes they use for U-Joints? The Driveshaft is in Phase and the vibration is only a high speed thing. Like 90mph My main issue is the amount of slag I can hear inside the thing. But if your buddy can do it for a resonable price -unlike Pats Driveline- Then mos tlikely go that way, no big rush either since winters comeing.
