Cam for a stock 383

I recently bought a 68 Dart GTS 383. the car is all stock and I am thinking about putting a larger cam into it. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would be the largest or best cam that I could go with? 727 trans, 2800 stall, 3:23 gears, stock intake & exhaust, 906 heads. I was thinking about a MP 509, but I am concerned that it will kill the low end.

Yea I'd agree with Adam on this one. The .509" is more meant to come on from 3200 upwards and with your gearing, stall and stock intake and exhaust I'd say go with a cam with a lift around .485, like the MP .484 or there abouts. I'm running the .509 (love it by the way) but I'm running a higher stall, 3200 higher gears, 3.91, headers and high rise and she's right in the meat of that cam.

I think even the MP484 is to much. With a short stroke motor and 323 gears you want to watch duration more then lift. I would look to stay in the 220* area on the intake. The MP484 is 240* @.050" and the 509" is 248*. They sound killer though.

Thanks guys, I'm starting to think the 484 range is the way to go, the car run great as is, just wanted to make it sound a little tougher.

the 484 will sound good. You may want to compromise and look at the MP 280-474. It will still have plenty of chop. I had the 484" in a 383 and it was kinda piggy down low.

Comp Cams also has a line of cams made to be replacements for the Mopar Purple cams.

I'll be running (at least initially) the MP280/474 in my 440 - along with TCI Breakaway (about 2500-2600), 3:55 rear, 906 heads, and Schumacher headers. Mine will be a street, not strip car.
