Hemi clone value?

I am going to build a 68 fastback with a HEMI I am wondering what a car like this done really well would be worth on todays market? it will have a detailed undercarriage, hemi hood, A100 seats w/aluminum brackets, dana, mini tubbed, not sure if a 4-speed or auto yet.
I am not going to pass it off as the real thing and not really a clone ut a really nice driver/ show car!

any thoughts, rebuild the stock 66 street hemi or go with a 528 crate motor? 4-speed or auto? radical or driver?

I was thinking of doing the same to my tubbed 440 68, but sold it. I'd go w/the 66 Hemi if you have an original block & build it w/all the good stuff: roller cam, good rods (Manley), JE pistons, etc & go w/the auto, just like the factory Hemi. Get in touch w/Fred Englehart. :protest: He sells all the correct hemi stuff including the heavy duty fiberglass S/S fenders & hood. I think a really correct clone w/internals upgraded, but stock appearing could bring $65 - $130K, depending on how you market it. Barret Jackson or Silver Auction might bring big bucks. Good Luck.

thanks for the input, I have a complete 66 motor and an Automatic with a manual valve body out of a 67 440 GTX, I thought of selling or trading the HEMI only because it might be worth more to someone who needs a 66 motor and I don't really need a numbers matching motor.then I could buy or build whatever I want. I am not too far from Kramer Automotive who also sells a lot of ss hemi stuff and also has an original car there I could look at. What else is uniqe to the hemi cars that I should try to do?

Kramer automotive is the place to go. Mopar Muscle had a feature article a while back about a 68 clone. I've also got a really nice 66 Hemi block...maybe I'll do a S/S Dart or cuda some day. Doing a 69 Hemi R/T , 4spd Charger, now. I saw a 6 cyl 68 fastback for sale recently, but can't remember where. Collectorcartrader.com??

I suppose it depends on how much money and effort you are will to put in to the project. Obviously, it would take more time and $$$ to put together a 68 Hemi Dart or Cuda....

I have seen clone hemi challengers go for 75G and more.I have seen really hemi datrs and cudas go for 200-500,000$ and more for a 1 of 9 type of car.If you you start doing a mod to a car, that was not part of that package when the car was sold, you just shot your self in the foot with a cannon. Can you sell the car,for sure for some good money, but no where near the amount of what it would have been if it was a stock clone.I would research the car you wish to do,and and do it as close to possible as you can,to get the big money,if you intend to sell it!my guess will be that whenits done, and you have driven it a few hundred miles, there will be no way in hell that any one in the world will get for any money, trustme, been there and done that.Mrmopartech

Depending on how detailed you get and how much motor yoou stuff in it, 30-90k are about all they're worth, IMO. There just isn't that much technology & the cars weren't that fancy to justify any more. I'm trying to sell mine now in that range & getting very few responses. S/S & A/FX here in Phx sells that 90k+.

the sum of its parts and the labor involved in building it . no historical value IMHO other that to make other aware that kind of car was built by the factory.

I`ve seen the clones selling in the 65-85k range. I agree with Mrmopartech, if you`re going to do one, then do it as close to an original as possible.

This a pretty darn good 68 Dart Hemi clone. Very good details down to the heater/radio deletes, intake, breathers, battery, plug wire color, k-member... Read the laundry list in the ebay add.

All that for $45K

These guys build beautiful cars. Click the link, scroll down and check their prices towards the bottom of the page. Look through the completed cars page too.

I'm not advertising for them, but they do them right - stance, wheel and tire choice, interior, engine bay and overall look. Prices seem about right for that level of finish.

I am thinking you might be able to buy these quality clone type cars for less than it would cost to build one for the next few years.

I agree.

off topic: Was it you that had a 68 Dart with a crate motor at Pomona for sale in the last year. If it was, did you sell it?

That and everyone building/selling Hemi Dart clones for resale just collectively crapped their pants.

Having the Mr. Norm name on it is a large part of the value.

For me, a correctly done Hemi clone (and I mean correctly done, painted red with after-market wheels is not correctly done) would be worth little more than a nice 68 + the cost of the drive train mods.

i agree that if this car were to be built for nothing more than reasons involving a resale value....you are going to be disappointed and that i think it would be borderline ridiculas and an attempt to make money off the pentestar. these cars should be re-created for what they were and for what they represent and NOT for what it would be WORTH. but its your money and your car. if i were to put my resources into building an SS clone , it would certianly be only to represent what was available from hurst and to represent what they were doing with these cars, and my sheer love for them. i am obsessed with the 68 Super Stock Hurst built Factory backed BO29 and LO23 race cars. they are so high dollar because of the limited numbers and for the equipment and for the history these cars established. personally , my opinion is, even though these cars are still raced today with a ton of upgrades , i think that bitching up an original car with wheel tubs and insane looking cages is a crime. drivetrain is one thing , but hacking into an already exceedingly rare and desirable car of that status is just wrong in my book. certainly building a clone of an SS car and then doing what you want to it is great and all , but doing it just to sell it off is just ludacris IMHTGO....
