Fluid Type??

What type of oil should be used in my A-833 (74, Duster, 360)??

You should use 80-90 weight gear oil or heavier. DO NOT under any circumstances use Dextron Trans fluid. Chrysler tried that for a few years and had nothing but failure.

If the transmission does not shift properly it is not because of thick oil.

FWIW, I have been using ATF in mine for 4 years and 28k miles with no issues. I had tried 75W-90 synthetic gear oil and had nothing but problems with the synchros crunching on down shifts. When I switched back to the recomended ATF all my shifting problems went away.

After I made the switch and I have read it in a couple of places that the A833 doesn't like synthetic gear oil, to slippery for the syncros.

I switched to 80w-90 with some Lucas Oil treatment in the original 95,000 4-spd in my 73 Duster340. My tranny was making some noise on hard upshifts and after switching it quieted down. I figure it was either some gear or needle bearing noise and the higher viscosity oil helps compensate for the wear. No problem with shifting either. I would only use ATF in real cold climates.

The Haynes manual recomends automatic transmission fluid.

the service manual states using ATF fluid, but when i changed the fluid in my 1976 4-speed o/d, it had what looked like 90wt. so thats what i put back in it with a qt of lucas. it shifts great. i have read in mopar action the syn. lube is a no no.

i would put attomatic trans fluid in it..

below are pictures of a 70 833 23 spline tranny with 112,000 miles on it, behind a 383 magnum motor, it is my fathers car, he bought it new, and put the miles on it doing just about everything, drag racing, speed shifting as much as possible, towing a camper etc...

the 1-2 fork was worn, probably from banging gears for so long... and needed to be replaced while it was open..

I can only speak from my experience, but ATF went back in the tranny, and all that was replaced was gaskets, bearings, and forks...


just food for thought - in the mid 70's he had the clutch replaced at the dealer, they put gear oil in the tranny , and he could not get it in gear during cold mornings, and was alot harder to speed shift...

this is how he drives it every time he has it out, and it has lasted 112,000 miles so far...
