i suspect that my rear main seal is slightly leaking, and since im putting a converter in and dropping the trans i figured that i might as well change this too. how do i change the rear main seal once the trans is out?

thanks,
daryl

You going to have to pull the engine and pull the crank out. If it where me since i have to go through that much trouble i would just rebuilt the whole motor and freshen it up.

Rear main can be replaced without removing the crankshaft.

Follow the steps in the FSM for accurate information

I don't have an FSM, but I am curious how you replace a rear seal with out remooving the crank?

i dont have that fsm thing either, but if its that much trouble ill just continue to add oil until i build my 340. if i can change it without pulling the motor ill do it htough

Take off the oil pan, probably have to drop the center link too. Undo the rear main cap bolts, and you will find the rear main seal. These things are notorious for leaking. If its not leaking much maybe leave it alone or if feeling adventurous change it. If you change it youself you should probably get a mopar small block manual or two. Has helped me out immensley.....So you dont have to take out the motor or crank.
Here's my rear main... :butthead:

if you are going to build the motor or replace it dont even bother. Its a real pain in the ass from under the car and messy to. If its not pouring oil just go with it untill you replace it with the 340.

Another distinct possibility is your oil pan end gasket. Like you say it's only leaking slightly so maybe leave it alone. I believe there is a different main cap made specifickly(sp) for an A body to correct this problem.

Could also be the back of the intake or sending unit leaking oil and running down the back of the engine.
