A driver called in to our customer service line on Jan. 11 regarding what he witnessed at Petro Effingham, IL, during the big snow storm that week. This is truly amazing. TA and Petro thank all of our customers for their selfless actions! Here is the report:[/FONT]

A Driver called in to let us know of the wonderful things that happened at the Petro in Effingham, IL, when the big storm hit earlier this week. He said there were families that drove cars that were stuck at the location due to the snow. The families were only planning on stopping there for a few hours while they were passing through, and didn't have enough money to stay for three days. The driver calling said he and other drivers were adopting these families and providing them with meals in the restaurant, places to sleep, and comfort and companionship to make it through these couple days.

He also said the employees were the same way -- snowed in, overworked, and exhausted. He said it was amazing to see the drivers coming together to help the restaurant staff bus tables, clean up their messes, and also take shifts allowing them to sleep in their trucks. He was so happy to see drivers coming together and helping others in time of need.

Hat's off to the American trk drivers, there is always a few bad apples but the majority of them are super good people as this story tends to show...unsung heros for some, and they are what keeps this country moving and living....

Yes, truckers are awesome!

I prefer to take long road trips at night than during the day. At night it's usually me and the truckers with another car once in a while. During the day you have all of the a-holes in cars cutting you off and weaving in and out of traffic. It's much easier to drive with the truckers, if you give them a break and let them in, they will get out of your way as soon as they can and let you go on your way. They are just trying to make a living so they have a home to come back to and food on the table just like anyone else.

Doesn't surprise me that truckers stepped up and helped out. Way to go truckers!

Every truck driver that I know is top notch. They all happen to be mopar fanatics, too, as well as good friends. They are some of the most humble and hard working people in the United States.

I agree with you Crazycuda. Truckers also box drunk drivers in and bring them to a stop, and hold up the idiots in cars at lane closures (the ones trying to race down the closed lane to the very end) to get traffic moving again.

I have personally taken two drunk drivers off the road and waited for the cops to show up and arrest them.

The blocking of the lane is risky as you can be ticketed for impeding traffic.

That's crazy, because if everyone merged left when the sign says too, traffic would never stop flowing. It's the idiots that stay in the wrong lane until the last minute that imped traffic. We did this one day, four abreast, to stop a bottleneck, and some lady in a SUV ran down through the median at 65 MPH laying on the horn to get past. It was ridiculous. We all waved when we passed her at the lane closure.

Yeah, another good point.

Truckers have CB's and usually are friends with other truckers who may be close by. And if you piss one off may find yourself surrounded and blocked by trucks! They can round up a bigger posi than you can and faster!

To quote Ron White, "I didn't know how many of them it was gonna take to kick my @ss, but I knew how many they were gonna use... That's good information right there... Overkill... So I backed down..."

I agree, but I have talked to several drivers who have been ticketed for it. The last one was a 250 dollar fine!

Exactly... there's always an a-hole that you know saw the sign, but has to cut in line.

I love when the truckers block those guys. I would let them in if they blocked them all the way down, but they don't know that I will and do not stay even with me...

In cases where traffic bottlenecks, I prefer to get behind a truck and keep a steady 5 - 10 mph roll behind a trailer; rather than speed up, stop, speed up, stop, speed up, stop.... Just do a slow roll keeping up with the trucks so I don't have to keep hitting my brakes.

I have no problem getting along with truckers on the road. Show them a little courtesy and they will get out of your way and leave you alone. I just use these rules:

1. If a truck signals to change into my lane, and I'm over half way past the back of the trailer, I will accelerate to get out of his way, and/or move over if there is another open lane.

2. If a truck signals to change into my lane and I am less than half past the back of the trailer, I gently apply the brakes to slow down and when the back of the trailer is clear of the front of my car, I flash the brights on and off twice to signal that the lane is clear and I am letting him in. He will then move over when he passes the person pulled over or other slower truck to let me by. The courteous ones will flash their trailer lights off and on twice to say "thanks" after I let them in.

3. Dim your brights when you come up on a truck from either direction.

I learned this from many years of driving at night with the truckers. I can't remember the last time I had a run in with a trucker. Besides, one of my good friends from high school's dad was a trucker and retired from Roadway after a long career. Mr. O'shea taught me how to cut a half hour off my trip to Detroit. I used to call him my "walking Rand McNally" before computers and google maps. He was actually better for directions before he retired. He would tell you what alternate route to take to avoid the current road construction in that city. Mr. O'shea was a typical feisty Irishman, good guy and fun to be around...

Personally, I prefer to drive at night; less traffic, more professional drivers, fewer "Sunday drivers". As I get older, though, I find that driving during the day is much easier on the eyes.

...........I give the truckers a big salute......That was a wonder thing well done that wont go unappreciated........kim.......

Great story ,Bruce..... Kudos,to truck drivers, the main lifeline of the States, and pretty much everywhere. I have a couple of friends, who drive truck. The stories, are unbelievable....

Never mind that--in some places, you can get SHOT!

That's when you note company names and start making calls to said company's safety departments. "One of your trucks just tried to run me off the road" gets you their UNDIVIDED attention very quickly!

Best way I have found to get past dickhead truckers is velocity: never seen a semi that could wind it up to 85-90 for any length of time...if they can, it takes quite a while.

Should be $250,000!

You want to fine the trucker for getting traffic moving again, when idiots don't read signs and merge? You must be one of the idiots I refuse to let in, sitting at the arrow board with his signal light on.

My point was not to f*ck with them in the first place.

Effingham, eh?

Well, you can have your Effingham, and eat it, too.

No, I want to fine IDIOTS who think they are the ones that enforce "their" rules. Honestly...I would not have a problem with JAIL TIME for slowpokes blocking traffic!

And you could also try bawling to your mommy that the big bully isn't letting you poop in his ice cream. Personally, when those ****-for-brains people, who have had the same opportunity to read the "left lane ends 2 miles ahead" as I have, decide to try to pass me in the last 200 feet, I WILL run them into the Jersey barrier if they really want me to. If you or they cannot exercise enough forethought to pass well before the merge, then fall in line. Arrogant little crybabies that wait till the last minute should be left sitting stranded in the lane that ended with the signal on till all those who have a clue about how to drive have safely passed. Go ahead and write down the plate number, and the company name. You musta been in my blind spot, jerk.

All but one trucker I have met have been very nice folks. I also have family that are truckers. These guys are truly road warriors; they eat, live, and sleep on the road. Some come home for the weekend, but many don't. Give them room, try not ride their tail, and for Christ's sake...READ the signs!
