Oil for diesel engines usualy has a higher detergent content than petrol engine oil, but has more addatives anti foam , and wear ( zinc ) so yes you can use it but if your rings etc have a bit of wear then you might burn a bit more of it

Yes ground out the wire to the sender unit at the tank end , if the gauge goes to full then you have a sender fault , more probably the float has a hole in it !! mine did !!!! a wine cork will get you out of trouble or a new sender unit
I had the same trouble and used the sender unit from my 318 as it matched the gauge and have no problem now it seems that the resistance is wrong for the gauge with some of the after market senders , I also use a capilary type temp gauge in the top hose of the rad " just in case " to check on...
