head fitment

I've run 72 340 J heads on a + .040 273 commando engine. If 1.88 intake valves, they should be OK but I mocked up the engine to check everything. Used offset dowels to center the chambers on the cylinders. Milled the heads to NHRA minimum, .040 block side and .038 intake side, ran Fel-Pro gaskets. Ran a stock 340 cam, lifters, valve springs, 71 340 intake and TQ. Ran great! Was in a 64 Barracuda, 4 speed had plenty of power everywhere. The Racing manuals said to notch the block for 2.02 intakes. You can do it just check everything so nothing goes bump, and remember everything has a tolerance.
