Hi everybody:

First ...Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year.

I was wondering what kind of exhaust everyone likes. I love how 340s sound..To me they have a kind of very distinct almost pinging sound at the tail pipe. They don't sound like a Chev or Ford at all...To me anyway maybe I'm wrong. I think this thing sounds awesome ..A little too loud for the trailer park but I want folks to hear me roar by when I'm coming from the opposite direction in traffic that's for sure

The PERFECT exhaust on a 383RR, 340 A body, or 440 GTX would be to duplicate the original factory, OEM exhaust. They can not be beat. However, "so far as mufflers" I have no idea how to do that, anymore.

My Dads 340 has 1 Cherry Bomb and 1 Flowmaster, Odd But man does it Sound F#%king Great.

The muffler is the big dictator of sound while the rest of the components shout into the loud speaker (AKA muffler)
There are basically 3 types of mufflers.

Absorbing like a Borla or Hooker/Dyno Max straight through muffler with a absorbing material like stainless steel wool or fiberglass like a glass pack.

Chambered mufflers like the Hooker Aero Chamber or a Flow Master.

Turbo like Thrush mufflers & Dyno Max and many others.

Your best bet is to attend a few car meets and shows to listen for the sound you like and ask what muffler is being run and then ask about the engine build starting with cam size, compression and what headers they have or exhaust manifolds they run. Because those are also dictating sound.

very subjective...and depends largely on your age!

55 but 16 in the head. Still stuck back in the 60-70s. I saw a guy pull out of the Walmart here in Kelowna in a 70 Challenger. The whole thing was just shaking. He must have been 70 but he would have looked stupid sitting in a Honda :)

..anyway, I have a stroked 360 with TTi headers into 3" Warlock race mufflers into 3" (x 30") resonators and runs a full 3" all the way out the back - passes inspection here (Ma.) and is still very strong sounding..

I don't have a 340, I have a 360, I've had many moparheads locally who thought I had a 340 just because of the way she sounds.
Here's one of a while ago with a comp mutha' thumpr cam.
Straight 3 inch true duals with Summit Street & Strip mufflers.

And one from inside while my wife was driving:

It sounded good, but was a little too loud for my tastes.

So I tried for a "middle ground" approach. I put in a Lunati Voodoo cam. Dual 2.5 inch with X-pipe exhaust and Magnaflows.

A tad bit on the quiet side but it definitely roars when you punch it and rumbles nicely with moderate acceleration:

I have headers in all the videos, so those will change the sound as well vs. with OEM exhaust manifolds.

-- On My 408 Valiant (3" exhaust), I had Flow Master 40s, and they sounded great, - BUT - too much drone on the highway. -- I replaced them with Cherry Bomb Turbos, from Summit, and they sound good with little or no drone. -- Possibly they would sound different on a 340 ??? -- To each his own.

I have headers and 2.5 exhaust into flowmaster 40s out the rear on my 360. I think it sounds pretty great, get lots of compliments about the sound.

when I had the huge-cammed 340 in my Duster back in the '90s, it had headers, dual 2 1/2" and walker turbo mufflers.
I watch all these videos hoping to hear something that sounds as good as it did, but it never happens...sorry guys:D

H pipe, no X pipe. Unless you want to sound like a riceburner...

It all depends on the overall setup.

Can't beat the flow of X-pipes, I have X-pipes and I've had many people at car shows complimented on how good my Duster sounds.

Also, the tips you have on the end or not make a huge difference in the final sound. I even have tips on my electric cutouts. I like oval megaphone shaped tips that are about a foot long the best, but the factory style tips on my '70 E-Body sound cool too. They all create a distinct tone.
