I'm rebuilding a heater box but don't need every seal and foam sheet in the "heater box foam kit" that DMT has for $80. So, I've decided to make the couple of charcoal foam door sheets I need.

Do any of you know what type of foam is used for the internal door in a heater box? I'm assuming some sort of light weight 1/8" thick open cell stuff?

Thanks!

Been a while since I replaced mine, but I believe it was . I would prefer closed cell since it won't absorb water. it also won't compress as easily if needed for a fit and seems to be tougher. Just checked my replacements, they are indeed open cell but 3/16 - 1/4" thick.

I used the grey door and window weather stripping from the hardware store 3 years or more ago and it's still working great.
It was the sticky backed strip stuff about 3/16 thick and I cleaned the surfaces really good to get any dust or loose stuff off and helped it with a little yellow 3M weatherstrip adhesive.

I don't know that open-cell is the best choice. The factory only needed it to last for the 3 yr warranty and whatever saved a nickel.
