Just picked up a 71 swinger. Turned it over once then the ignition went dark. Blown fuse? Blown harness? It had been sitting over a year...Help!

For all of us to clarify exactly what "went dark" means... Is it still cranking with no spark? or does it not crank at all with the key in the crank position.

no spark could be anything from the coil, to the distributor, to a bad connection

no crank could be anything from a bad ignition switch, to loose battery terminals, to a bad neutral safety switch.

more info to accurately help please.

Or a ballast resistor, or fuse link, or bulkhead connector, or amp meter, or... :D

THAT'S RACIST!!!!

thanks for all the replies!!!

I hooked jumpers up and got power to the ignition (dash lights illuminated, oil lamp, etc...). I then tried to fire it up, heard the starter catch, then everything shut down. Dash lamps went out, no power to the ignition, nothing.

just went blank - nothing? any odors? smoke?

1....Numbha whone is to see if you have power "past the battery clamps." Could be dead/ bad battery, poor battery post connections, bad cables.

2....Get a meter, a test lamp, and some alligator clip leads. You used to be able to buy them at Radio Sh## I don't know about lately

3....Get yourself a copy of the factory service manual, and if you like, an aftermarket wiring diagram. These can be had free over at MyMopar. Some of them over there came from the guys here

4....Take your test lamp or meter, turn on the headlamp switch and leave it on. Anything? Put your test neg clamp to ground (light or meter) on the engine block. Stick the POS lead on the battery POS clamp, power? stab directly into the top of the post. Power? If not, move the ground connection directly to the top of the battery NEG post. In other words, "step" along the path until you find where it's lost.

Power should be present on the starter relay "big stud." This takes off with a FUSE LINK which feeds in through the bulkhead connector. Either of these are suspect

This is great advice. I really appreciate all the fantastic feedback and look forward to posting again once i've tried a few of your suggestions

^ this is where you should start - - if the battery is bad - not holding a charge - get a new one. Chasing a power issue with a bad battery in the car is a monumental waste of time.
This....O.'Reilly's,& Autozone ,will charge your battery ,for free..(might take a while,if it's sitting a while,& sulphated) Let's start with a 12.2 -12.6 voltage battery...... The slower the charge,on the old battery,(heat destroys batteries..) the better....
