Swapping out 1973 340 for a 360. Engine builder said with the flex plate to knock off the weight from the stock torque converter that it needs to be neutrally balanced. With 375 HP, will the stock TC work? Or do I need to upgrade to what (stall)? Looking to receive the engine and have it installed in a couple of weeks.

727 Transmission

Thanks Much!
Eric

Need more info... gear ratio, car weight, intended driving style, cam spec etc....

I will get the cam info from the builder, but stock 3.23 rear end, stock weight - 1973 Dodge Dart Sport Weekend Cruiser and possible pass at local strip 2-3 times a summer.

After speaking with my engine builder (MRLPeformance) he is recommending about a 2500 stall speed and it needs to be neutrally balanced. Any recommendations for such a torque converter?

Thanks,
Eric

I'd just ask Mike (MRL) He's building the engine and he really knows his stuff.

I did. He said about 2400-2500 stall speed, but didn't have a specific one to recommend.

I'm looking at the B&M Holeshot 2400 P/N 10415

Dont waste your money on a off the shelf converter, spend a little extra and have it built for your application.

Who do you recommend? I was thinking about the B&M Holeshot option as after the engine and everything else. It is a tough sell to the wife. It's bad enough that 300 miles after buying the car that the piston rings went south on the original engine. Then the back her DD into mine for another $1200 expense. My Dart is just a weekend cruiser and may 2-3 strip passes a season. Just trying to save a little $$$

If you paid up to have mike build you a engine, save up and have a converter built to alow the engine to perform as it should. Lenny at ultimate converter concepts in NC is a good choice, as well as dynamic

Get the converter that is best for YOUR COMBINATION. Maybe a 9.5 inch from Dynamic is right for your car, and then again maybe not. Get all your specs. together and then look at Dynamic, A-1, T.C.S. and other websites of converter builders. Send your specs to each of these companies and see what they recommend. The 2400-2500 sounds about right to me. I think the 9.5" converter will be too much for you. Just because it works great in someones' car does not mean it is right for yours. As it has been said before, off the shelf units from a variety of Parts Houses might not be your best bet, and once you've installed the converter and used it, you'll probably find that it is non-returnable even if its wrong for your car.

Dynamic quoted me $395 11" stall 2800 and UC 9.5" Billet front S&S for $895.00. $895 is not going to fly with the wife. Spent $1500 for front end rebuild, $6400 new engine plus whatever labor cost, $1200 to fix two damage bumpers and another $895 she will flip for a car that we have had for almost 1 yr and was only running/drivable for 300 miles lol. I am not sure the condition of the trans, but if it's like the engine, those piston rings let go after 300 miles.

I have been told by a Torqueflite trans guy that stock stall is 2400

Per my engine builder Mike (MRL)
Cam specs: 284/228 .480 lift 112* LSA 108*

I run a Turbo Action 10" S800 converter in my street/strip car and very happy with it. IMO it was the best bang for the buck $600, for my combo performance. Shifts like grandma's car driving normal, tire shredding with the pedal down. My Magnum 360 is around 400HP high 11, low 12 car.
Paul Forte at Turbo Action is great and will not BS you.
Run what you have if money is tight and save up for a good converter to wake up your combo.

I had the 9.5 Dynamic in my 318 Duster. It was a mild build, but with the 9.5 from Dynamic, it would stall like stock when you were cruising around town, but when you foot braked it, it would flash to 3200 rpm. I had a 480 lift Comp cam in that car and the launches were quite nice with that converter.

Let me tell you from experience do not go cheap on a torque converter! It will bite you,in the end you'll spend more than if you just pony up for the right one first from a reputable converter shop! I would use a of the shelf converter before I had a average shop build one. (Been there) Either go with Turbo Action, ati even Tci makes a good converter. I've never had a dynamic so I can't say one way or a nother

...and no one has mentioned-

it will run with the converter he has if he knocks off the weight like MRL told him to do in the first place.

$0

I spoke to Paul and went with a Turbo Action 11" 2500 Stall based upon his recommendations on my engine and how I intend to use the car.

Don't forget PTC . I have had good luck with their 9.5 converter in my 408 Duster and their prices are not bad either.
