Did anyone ever hear of a 383 that was made in the factory, when new, in 1965 - 66, using a block with 361 casting numbers ? -- I know of it happening.

not a big deal, same casting with different machining. done by ford and gm with blocks and heads etc.

I have one. - The casting number on the block indicates 361, and the stamped info, on the pad, near the base of the distributor indicates 383. -- I talked to a Guy that worked in a Plymouth Dealership, back then, and He said that the stamped info actually indicates the cubic inches. - I've been told that this sort of thing was done by all of the Manufacturers, back then, due to running short on various parts. --- BTW -- I just checked this since My original post.

Interesting, since the bore on the 361 is 4.125 and the 383 is 4.250.

Ford did similar with their FE series engines. Most have "352" cast on them but could be any displacement up to 428 with absolutely no way to tell them apart on the outside.
