A buddy of mine came up to me at work today and asked me if i wanted to buy a mopar. Said a friend of his had a black 74 duster V8 car. I said to my buddy, "well give me the long and short of whats right and wrong with it". He is asking $3,500. I remember seeing it at his place for awhile in storage. I figured on offering $2,500 for it. Wanted to fix it and flip it. Have no idea what i could get for it if i fixed it and sold it off. My problem is if i bought it and fixed it, i might not want to sell it lol.

Pros
West texas car = little rust
New rims n tires
Vmatic shifter
Duals
Shift kit
Decent running 318
8.25 rear
Disc brakes
Go wing
Demon twin scoop
Never wrecked

Cons
Burnt up dash wiring harness
Black paint in rough shape
Body is just ok
Interior is rough

2500. is way too much.

looks like Joe Dirt and brothers had a party in that car.

As much as I love those dusters, I would walk away. maybe 800- 1000. being nice.

Supposedly the trans and rear end have been gone through. I know where theres a 74 valiant moredoor thats got an unmolested dash i can get the wiring from. The reason the dash is apart is there was a dash wiring fire. Everything melted together.

If you get a good deal, what will happen is your 'Cuda will go on the back burner. Ask me how I know.

Car is a "less desirable" year, interior is trashed, burned and melted under dash is a pain to fix, crappy paint probably means hidden body issues.....about a 800 dollar car in my opinion.

I know, im bad about dragging home 4 wheeled orphans. I figure i could swap out the dash harness with the good uncut one i know about at a local boneyard from the 74 valiant, install the gage panel. Fix a few things, and flip it. Swapping the dash harness out is a pretty easy fix.

what I usually do with over priced cars like that is let them sit. At that price it's going to sit and sit. In this economy and the holidays coming, let it sit and maybe the seller will get real.

Yeah, you probably can do that, but what's your time worth, both fixing what you KNOW is wrong with it, plus the things you DON'T know about yet? Then deal with all the tire kickers when you try to flip...that's part of the reasons I wouldn't pay 2500 for it personally

I was gonna go look at it on friday. I am getting second hand information, and need to look it with my own eyes first hand.

Good point, maybe deep down inside i am thinking if i cant sell it, i will just drive it.

Sounds like a plan. I will go look at it and get a better idea, and then prob let it sit. Nobody else out my way is interested in one of these. I think it would make a neato daily driver.

as much as I love 73+ dusters, just have to be real that there are a lot of them around.

I paid 2500. for a 72 demon in a bit better shape than this duster around the beginning of the year. I thought it was a little high but a 72 demon (real demon, not a clone) is a car that there are way less of them around and if I didn't get it, the odds I might find another deal like it are slim to none. Your Barracuda would be another one like that, they just are not around anymore.

73+ cars are drying up rapidly, but there are still quite a few out there.

Well the main thing as you know is to look at the body. If it has very little to know rust, then that is a big savings. The '73 and up Duster's might not be as desireable as the earlier models, but still pretty popular. Look at some of the crap out there for sale. With nothing but rust. Never know til you check it out. Never know what the owner might take. They may need some money.

The car is worth saving, you have to think about the time investment. The electrical repairs are easy but very time consuming. Doesn't matter what you pay for the car, The question is can you afford the time investment when you have a very cool car under construction. The world is full of project cars and very short of time. JMHO
DR---------:)

many times it's not about what you're getting when you buy something like that - it's about what you're not getting and what it's going to take/cost to replace and repair it... when you go to look at it - try to remember to calculate out what is missing... make sense?

i think if you pay anymore then $1000 you are nuts. i don't care how muchmoney worth of parts are on it.

need a lot of work. time is money. if you are looking to flip it then you need to get it as cheap as possible.

Does he have the missing interior? I would get it running ,presentable and then flip it. I'd stay below a grand if I was going to buy it.

I like that car.

Looks mean.

factory black on black?

In Texas???

As always, money is made on the buy, not the sell.

If you can get it for under 2K and put no more than 1K in it, you might get 4-5 out of it if you ask 6 or 7.

...provided it looks like it's worth 6 or 7.

I may be wrong, but if the car was available in my area and you have access to the parts needed, I would go 2000. Of course, I am not the best in making really good deals. I believe you could make a nice car out of this one

Hell, the seats are worth $250.

Beware about engines and transmissions that are "supposed" to be in good running condition??? If you have to tear the engine down or overhaul the tranny you'll lose money (on top of all the other stuff). Now if you can start the engine and get it move under it's own power, that's another story. People buy cars super cheap all the time in a "not running" condition. The fact that it''s not running is a very good bargaining chip.
The rear end is worth quite a bit, but double check that it is actually an 8 1/4.

Treblig

Well where I'm at, the easily sellable stuff, wheels / tires, scoop, wing, seats, shifter would exceed $1500. A low rust body isn't common at all around here. Then there's the diff etc. I'd pay $2000CAD if I couldn't get it cheaper. I know I would still make money parting it out so I would take the chance on the build up. Of course I would try for less. :)

I even like those nascar style wheels on it.

They fit the attitude perfectly.

I disagree about engine work or trans killing the value.

A running 318 and trans is fairly cheap and a later model, like one from a 5th Ave would yield an upgrade in durability and possibly even performance.
