Well everything looked really nice with the restoration until my son pointed out the stain below the gas cap. See attached picture. My shop tried what the could think of, but no luck. It clearly happened after the decal was applied. Are there an magical solvents that will work on your vinyl?

I use dishwasher detergent, and if that doesn't do it then I use 409 then bleach.

Possibly denatured alcohol ??? It is a solvent and I don't believe it will harm plastic or vinal. Take care that it cannot get behind stripe as it will most likely loosen the adhesive. It works great to remove permant marker.

If you find a solution please post it up.
Did you clear over the decal?

I would need to check with the shop, but I think all the paint work, including clear coat was already done before the stripes were applied. This was a 'modern' color/clear paint job. It is possible that final detailing/buff was after the stain. Just was not noticed.

All, Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Give us a call and speak to Chris. He is going to try and help you out. He has seen your photo.

I spoke with Chris at PhoenixGrafix. Unfortunately, he did not have a magic bullet. He suggested that more aggressive attempts to remove the stain would either damage the vinyl or shorten its life. Best course of action is to find out how the stain happened, fix that issue, and replace just the driver quarter stripe. PhoenixGrafix will sell a partial stripe. The stain must be from sort of gas overflow. Also maybe some residue from the gas cap.

I had a similar issue and tried compound to a clay bar and nothing worked. By accident I had some Meguiars Paint cleaner in the clay bar kit. I used it rubbing it gently on with a microfiber towel in back and forth motion and it totally restored the stripe. Just watch the edges of the strip when you doing it so you don't get an accidental tear.

This is where prevention is key. Not overfilling the gastank, watching for any splashback as you are filling up; and washing off the area below the gascap asap if gas in spilled or splashed. If it is not cleaned up the gas will also stain the paint eventually. I have used the gas stations windshield washer squeegee many times after a fill up and then used soap & water or waterless cleaner when I got home.
