Hey guys - I am a new owner, not having yet taken possession. I'm new to antique / classic cars, but not new to vehicle ownership. And I'm experienced on forums.

I hope I can learn plenty from you guys and keep my new ride more pure than anything else. I hope to be able to contribute as well. Let me give you guys some background. 20 years or so ago, an older buddy (he must have been at least 60 at the time), asked me to come to his home and help him install an engine. I was ~25 at the time. It was my first engineering job, and luckily for me, I made a couple close buddies with some older engineers. And even more importantly, I LISTENED to what they had to say about life and finances, etc.

I got to my buddy's house and there was a 1972 Plymouth Scamp, sans the engine. And then there was an engine on a cherry picker. My first thought was ... no way we're getting that engine in there. In my mind, we just weren't capable of such a feat.

But in short order, the engine was in there. I just did whatever my pal told me to do. He did then, and always has had a "Can Do" attitude. That was a good lesson for a 25 year old. I had fun helping him.

Fast forward to a few years ago. My buddy wanted to sell this car because he was selling his home and knew he wouldn't have room. I think his plan then was to NOT buy another house and just gallivant around the country in his truck and camper. He called me and asked if I wanted to buy the Scamp. I had to turn him down because I had 5 cars at the time and didn't have room.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. It took him a few years to sell his house, and then it happened QUICKLY. So, he's bunked in with one of his sons, and there are cars all over the place and the old Scamp is sitting outside. He called me again and asked if I wanted to buy it. And while the answer is YES, I told them I had to turn him down because I still have 5 cars and now a HELOC that bugs me to have hanging over my head. He said I could take it, and pay for it later, to get it out of the weather. I told him I have to respectfully decline because those kind of car deals have a way of going south.

So, this week he called and said I could have it for free! Because it's killing him (and kills me too) that it is just sitting out in the weather now, quickly deteriorating. His son has a few project cars of his own and can't do anything with the Scamp. So, I'm going to make room for it. And I'll get to the car in the next couple weeks to pick it up in my enclosed trailer.

But I'm going to need help from you guys in the know. The brakes are not functioning but parking brakes work well enough that I should be able to load it up. One side of the master cylinder is dry. And it has an exhaust leak under the car. It fires right up, and runs well. And is in very good shape, no rust. It's not that I don't know how to add brake fluid and bleed brakes. It's more like, which pieces, parts, fluids, processes is best for this old beauty. I don't want to make repairs or improvements to the car and learn later that what I did was not ideal.

I'll post up a picture when I take possession of it!

No need to be humble. All of us together "might" know everything but none of use individually knows everything. We all have some area of expertise and that's why you'll get advice from many different members as you ask your question.

Gotta have pics, it gets the juices flowing!!!:steering::mob::welcome:

We are here to help, need more information about the car. Post up some photos when you get it home and are ready to work on it.

WELCOME -- There sure is lots of info, and knowledge, here. -- Quite a deal on the Scamp. Does He have any more with a deal like that ? -- :D --

That's awesome, welcome. There are plenty of great people here who have a lot of knowledge to share

OP,you are a fragile Virgin lol..... I am on a bunch of car forums and this is a good group right here for sure. Learning about alot of basic stuff is just Youtube away. Welcome to the sick world of owning a Mopar lol....

Thanks. I'm on mopar #2 here. I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 4X4 Quad Cab, with the mighty Cummins and 6 speed manual, that has been in the fleet since 1999. I spec'd it out, ordered, and took delivery of it immediately after it's birth in St. Louis. A big blue sport trim model. I call it Babe, as in Paul Bunyan's Big Blue Ox. I get guys wanting to buy it weekly. It will remain with me until it is crashed, blows up or is stolen. I still love the big loud tank.

7miles out, what a great story! I'm a fairly new Scamp ('75) owner myself. Welcome and good luck with yours! A ton of knowledgeable people on this sight. And they are always willing to help.

:welcome: to the fray! WAY looking forward to seeing the Scamp - 70-72 Scamps are my favorite A-Body cars. Oh, and I am some kinda jealous too - a free 72 Scamp!!!! Who gets that!!??? :wtf: These things are pretty basic and most of the mechanical stuff are the same as Darts - and most manufactures have it sorted out and actually (finally) list Scamps and Valiants. Can't wait to see that car!

Welcome from Michigan. Where is PTC? While we wait for pics, what else can you tell us about your new ride? Driveline, options, colors etc?

Welcome 7Milesout! I live in PTC also. This site has a lot of good people that will help you with your Scamp. I have a factory 72 Dart Manual you can use if you like. I think most of the components on a Scamp is the same as a Dart. Maybe we could meet up sometime.

69conv: Good questions. PTC = Peachtree City, GA. My friend some years ago had a larger Chrysler vehicle. That car had a 360. He wind up pulling that engine, sending it off to a former NASCAR engine builder, and (according to my friend) this is the last engine this guy built. I can't think of the guy's name at the moment, but I'm going to get my friend to write it all down for me (so I won't forget). It wasn't "built" like a NASCAR engine. But it was built (as best as I can describe) to be optimized. Good HP output, yet reliable. The engine build was probably mid-90's. He also carried over the drive shaft, rear end & rear axle from the other Chrysler, all heavier-duty than what was originally on the Scamp. To look at the car, it looks all original. It has a bit of a rip on the driver's seat, but he has brand new seat covers (original from my understanding) to replace this in the trunk. The car is green with a black vinyl top. I will post up pictures when I take ownership. I have a ton to do before and during that time (i.e. - I have to clean out the garage to make room for it, and meanwhile my son and I bmx full time, and the wife wants other stuff hauled off to the dump). Lots of stuff to do. Besides getting the brakes working and repairing the exhaust, I think I want to put baby moons on the car. I think baby moons look fabulous on cars of this age. I think it has the original hub caps on it.

72dart - Yes, let's meet up. Let me get the car first. When I have it stored in my (unholy mess of a) garage, we'll get together and you can look it over. I'm going to buy some auto-dollies and put it on those so I can push it over out of the way in the garage. My garage is full of a lot of my late brother's stuff (I can't seem to part with), an LS 460L, a golf cart that is used daily by my son to drive to school, an ATV, a dirtbike, bicycles out the ying-yang, bmx pieces & parts, a stinky smaller mongrel of a dog that sheds like a head of hair a day, and lots of junk. It's the "junk" that I'm going to have to load up and get rid of. That and some other junk from the house the wife wants rid of. I'll get pictures of the car when I get it to my house. My sister is coming this weekend, so I've got to put on the dog & pony show for her (and the people she is bringing (my niece and etc)), and then I think the weekend after this (3/4) I will go get the car. I gotta bring the enclosed trailer home and (mainly) confirm the tires are still good to go. I don't need to blow a tire with a 3,500 lb car in there.

The original engine was a 318, and the transmission was a 904. These were swapped for a 360 and a 727 out of a 1975 Dodge Regal (he thinks it was). The engine was built by (or at least under supervision of) Herb McCandless. The driveshaft and rear end are also from the Regal. This is the info I just received.

Welcome from the Great North West.
AND as stated above...Pictures or it didn't happen!

Sounds like a very solid platform. I'm anxious to hear all the specs on the motor. Got me on the edge of my seat.

Alrighty - There's a date set. On this Saturday I *plan* to go pick-up the car. I will *try* to get pictures throughout the transition of possession, and the loading it up in the trailer. One thing that tickles me (because I'm a bit odd I guess) is that I will be towing this Mopar product with a Mopar product. My 2000 Dodge Ram 2500HD 4X4 Quad Cab with a Cummins and 6 speed manual.

I always enjoy doing anything with that truck. It has a 5" straight pipe. And I mean STR8! No muffler, no cat, no resonator. And the sound? Oh wow. Enough about the truck, that's for different forums! :D

69conv: It is a solid platform. My buddy who is giving me the car, is as smart as a person gets. He never half-arsed anything. I do not know what specs you want to know. But anything more than the following, let me know. It is a 360 engine. I would imagine the bore / stroke / heads / pistons are likely the original items. I doubt the cams are original. The way it sounds ... it doesn't exactly lope, but it sounds like maybe it's halfway between a stock engine, and one with so much overlap, that it doesn't idle so well (which is the sound most hotrodders like to hear ... the loping (I believe it's called)).

Which is just about exactly how I suspect my buddy would have wanted it. Not loping enough to be a problem on the street, but more "fun" that just a mild street engine. I can also tell you, he just put a fresh battery in it, and a brand new carburetor. I forget the size, but he put the old carburetor in the new carburetor box and left it in the trunk. I would imagine the receipt for it is there, I'll look that up. If not, I'll ask my buddy the size. I'm guessing it is 600 cfm.

It has air bags in the back, and I know they're basically empty, so I will have a bicycle pump and pump them up a bit if it gives any trouble just limping into my enclosed trailer (I doubt it).

There's only one possible issue with this whole deal. A bit of my story. My buddy, he's got to be 80. He just sold his house and moved in with his son. But now he has basically moved out, and is living in his camper full time. I think he just doesn't want to purchase a house and have to have someone to deal with that when he passes. But, some (or a lot) of his stuff remains at his son's house. I'm not sure what all. But that's where the car is. My buddy told me that he has heard through the grapevine (which means one of his other sons) that the wife of the son who he moved in on (temporarily) is making some comments about "abandoned property." So my buddy thinks there's some thought running through the D-I-L's head that she's going to claim as much of his stuff as she can ... including the Scamp. But, my buddy says he's 90% sure his son will not make a beef about me coming to pick-up the car, and etc. But we will see. The only bit of strategy (recommended by my buddy) is to not call his son until Friday (the only day during the week he's at home) to let him know I will be there Saturday to pick up the car.

That will limit the amount of time they (and especially the D-I-L) can react to me coming, and try to pull something. Worst case is, I call my buddy, he has to drive a few hours to provide me with the vehicle. He seriously doubts it will come to that.

A bit of a story ... sorry. But wish me luck!!!

It might be a good idea to get the title and maybe even have it signed over, that way there isn't any question of ownership. I could see that solving a lot of problems before they start. In Michigan a notarized bill of sale for $1 indicates a sale and is all you need to start the ownership transfer process Your department of motor vehicles or whatever they call themselves in your state can provide solid answers. Best of luck!!!
