Never heard of them until I read this Clevite 77 bearing guide:

H series bearings have a medium level of eccentricity, high crush and rod bearings have a
hardened steel back and thin overlay. These bearings also have enlarged chamfers for greater
crankshaft fillet clearance and are made wi
thout flash plating for better seating. Bearings with
.001” extra clearance are available for standard size shafts and carry the suffix “HX” (X = extra
clearance). Rod bearings are available with or without dowel holes (HD = with, H = without),

Really ? you probably shouldn't be reading that if you have to ask , they are holes for fitting on dowels , Not trying to be harsh but you could be in for some expensive lessons -just saying eh !

For use in aluminum rods, a set of CB663HND will have a hole in the lower bearing that sets over a brass dowel which helps to keep the bearing from spinning. Aluminum rods grow so much from ambient to operating temp, the bearings lose crush so dowels are used as well.

In some applications, notably engines using aluminum rods, the rods have dowels to locate and hold the bearing shell in place so they don't rotate. The big ends of the rods sometimes deform enough to loose the bearing crush that normally holds the bearings in place.

A good example of dowels and dowel holes are the cylinder heads and block deck. The block has dowels that fit into holes in the block deck. The heads have corresponding holes for the dowels to locate the heads properly on the block.

Another good example of dowels is the bellhousing. There are two dowels in the bellhousing flange of the block that have corresponding holes in the bellhousing of the transmission, to properly locate bellhousing and transmission to the back of the block.

Come on man. Nobody knows everything.

I agree but some basic skills should be developed before delving into tech manuals don't you think ? like we are on the internet at the moment -google could have answered this question discretely , or a dictionary maybe ? hey I expose myself to ridicule same as everybody else at some point or another , I can laugh at my own folly can you ?

dow·el
/ˈdou(ə)l/

noun

  • 1.a peg of wood, metal, or plastic without a distinct head, used for holding together components of a structure.
verb

  • 1.fasten with a dowel or dowels.

If you don't know don't be afraid to ask. Some simple questions for most of us may be confusing for the beginners. Better to ask than to not know and make costly mistakes.

Well sure. I can laugh at my own folly, but generally, not at anyone else's.
