where am I going wrong?

When you remove heavy spring from pedal assy., do you need a light spring to keep pedal up high? Or does spring at fork do all the work?

:soapbox:well there is another hour of my life wasted I will never get back!, I finally got back to this after an entire weekend of building raised vegetable beds, lawn cutting, helping #1 son put his new 340 in his truck, looking after grand kids, and the list goes on, I went back to attempt to remove this spring at 8pm this evening and threw in the towel again at 9pm, I cant believe I have helped my son rebuild a 4 spd trans, install a v8 engine, re-seal a rear end, rebuild the front end, replace all the brakes on this car but I can not remove a stupid spring! I tried the screw trick, wedges, an arsenal of tools but every time I am close the damn thing just pops back on, I think I just need a different tool, the one I can almost get it off with is a small fork style snap on pry bar but its too round on the shaft so it pops off the spring, I think I need one that is flatter like a pry bar but it needs the fork to hook into the end of the spring where it goes over the stud on the pedal box, any way sorry for the rant, just had to vent a little!

Have you tried it with the pedal on the floor? It would be best to disconnect the downrod from the pedal. The spring will be a bit more taught, but there is plenty of room to install the washers;LOTS and lots of washers. Actually I used screwdrivers and such, to span both sides at once. but the handles were heavy and some of them wanted to fall back out. No matter, I won!
BTW, does your clutch pedal have the stiffener bracket on it? I think that piece will no longer be needed and it sure gets in the way. I don't recall what I did with mine.I also removed the seat.

Thanks, I removed the clutch adjustment rod below at the clutch fork so the tension is off, yes I tried removing it up and down, it seems at mid point the spring is stretched the most and either up or down is in the same position but down is easiest to work with, it is difficult to get screws in the slots as they are very tight even at its most stretched point, I am thinking of going back to washers, not sure about the stiffener bracket but I assume its there as under the dash is mostly UN-molested, thanks

Well it dose say pedal must be out of car which I an trying to avoid doing uo think it might be difficult doing it that way in the car thanks for the help though

If this is anything but an original slanty or 318 car, then it will have the stiffner bracket across the spring, way up high on the pedal. And I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure the stiffener has to come off cuz it keeps the spring captive.
If you can see the uppermost pivot pin, then the bracket is already gone.

I win! One screw and two big pry bars, lots of energy after eating dinner and some anger adrenaline I even slightly bent the clutch pedal but I was able to straighten it back, the pedal now returns properly and clutch works I just need an inch more length on the adjust rod that goes onto the clutch fork so I think I will just take that to the welding shop that is around the corner from my work tomorrow and get them to weld an inch in, then DONE! Thanks for all the help guys.

Now can any post a picture of where the clutch interrupt rod goes, I had to remove the switch to get the spring out but the little rod that goes from the switch to ? Was disconnected already so I'm not sure where it goes to I thought maybe it went to where the spring anchored but the loop on the rod seems too small for there, thanks again

Hooooo RAY!!!!!!!

P.S. I may call for a tip. It still needs to be done on my other car. Grooooan!

another tool I used was a 5/16 x 3/8 drive socket on a 6 inch extension then I slipped the socket over the spring end and used it as a pry bar to pull down and over to the side. just glad its over!

I just performed this on my Duster. I removed the shaft clip where the clutch pedal pivots from, & removed the rod from the pedal to the Z bar.
I then slid the clutch pedal outward to the left, it will go that direction b/c the clip is gone. When you slide it about an inch, the pedal flange will not hit the stop and will pull forward towards the handbrake handle. Then I used a heavy flat blade screw driver. Pried at the spring/pedal rod and the spring popped off.Another way to skin a cat. I always wear safety glasses when working with springs, it adds to the "fun" when the glasses fog up!
