So i have a 1970 dodge dart, the dash pad is totally KILLED. the vinyl is flaking off in huge pieces, and the foam got soaked at some point and is completely rotting off of the frame. the frame is still good...will those dash pad covers work if the foam on the pad is trashed? is there a place i can get new foam? Im trying to avoid having to pay like 400$ for a new one from classic indsutries since the "cover/cap" style one is only 100$

The main thing about caps is you need have something "sturdy" underneath so it will have good adhesion. I capped mine but the dash pad only had one bad crack down the center. Yours sounds like it's in pretty bad condition. My thinking is the cap needs to be glued to the pad material not the foam. It might glue to the foam if it's not coming lose from the frame... I don't know. Probably not answering your question. You might be better off buying $400 pad and be done with it instead of prepping, glueing a cap on and worrying if it is going to stay nicely glued in place. Maybe someone will chime in that has used a cap that is glued to the foam.

You could tape off the top of the new cover, lay your frame it it and fill it with that expanding foam insulation.
It was one of the things I considered before doing this.

You know what they say about a blind squirrel. :D
Seriously though, that would have been my next best choice if I hadn't built the carbon fiber stuff.

i see you have what appears to be a modern radio system too, were you able to install that without cutting into the dash?

It's cut and I didn't do it, but I would have anyway.
I do whatever to get what I want out of the car, like touch screen nav, music and internet access folding down in front of the rear view mirror and is connected to the car sound system.
I put the scene in the window, but the rest is real, and it charges with the 5 volts it needs off the car's 12v system with a voltage limiter.

I bought a new red one from PG Classics or under 300.00 when they had one of there 25 percent sales going on. I had read some bad reviews about their quality but mine is perfect. Mine is red and they are always a little higher but in the end I am glad I went with the new one.

I don't know what your time is worth but for the cost of powdercoating or paint you can eliminate the dashpad all together.

time always worth more than money, time is all i have :D

As stated the other alternative is to leave the pad off. There have been a couple of guys who have welded up the holes in the steel dash frame, filled and painted it. Doesnt look too bad if well done, IMO
