ok last year before I put THE BARRACUDA AWAY for winter I was needing a new alternater , they didn't have the 1965 style in a 60 amp so I got a newer style but it has 2 fields but I am not charging. clip for juice only fits on 1 tab . so while I am trying to heal from accident I thought well I cant think , but was hoping some 1 could tell me what I have going on here?
with this style alternator . you will see green wire attached to left ear nothing on right RUSTY OR CRACKEDBACK or any 1 have an answer might have to draw me a pic ture right now with my concussion , I never had 1 this bad , but never got ran over by a semi either . by the way I MISS ALL YOU GUYS AND GIRLS HOPE your summer is going well.

The other field connection on ALT needs to be grounded. Do that and go from there

Yup. Ground the one the green is not hooked. Please use a multimeter to make CERTAIN neither of them already are.. Some of these rebuilts come grounded. You may have hooked the green to the "possible" grounded one and popped the regulator

If you have a good core, there is a place near me that rebuilds starters and alternators and makes their own components in house... They did a nice job on my kid's 68 Valiant alt....

You need to upgrade the positive wire to a thicker gauge wire. Something like a 8 ga, or 4ga. Once you get it charging.

What about the regulator? Are you still running the 1965 style regulator or did you swap it out to one to go with that dual field alt ?

This is what I'm referring too. You're running a 60 amp alternator.
So you need to use 8 AWG wire.

Quick Start

People have different views but they can't even get a MP ignition to work.

That OEM wire, although minimally adequate, is adequate. When you start upgrading or adding accessories that draw more current, further upgrades are req'd.
IF when the 60 amp alternator is recharging a dead battery or other scenario proves the OEM wire to be inadequate, chit happens sometimes.
The simplest solution is a larger gauge wire routed directly from Alt' Batt' post directly to the battery positive terminal. This addition will instantly alleviate any worry but would bypass the ALT' gauge in your dash / renders that gauge inaccurate. All this isn't really worth the read at this point. The additional amperage this alternator could produce may never create a problem.

hey thanks for the tip guys , it was just a ground run from the other field to the alternator mount and and she"s sending juice now if you run into this problem it took a 5 inch piece of wire and 1 u connecter to slide in between the field nut , and a clean raw end to put in beteewn alt groun wire and the alt mount tighten up ready to rock . some thing so simple and stupid but I am now upgraded to new er style 2 field 60 amp alt , because its to hardtop find the 65 style alt core to rebuild to 60 amps don't turn them in for cores , try to sell here or give away . THANKS ALL HAGR812 winstoninwisc time for a new gas tank next its 53 years old , when I get feeling better , its good theropy

Great result, but as-stated that factory 12 awg wire won't hold up when the alternator outputs its full 60 A. If the insulation melts and touches ground anywhere, you will get a major release from the battery (think welding torch), which will route thru your dash ammeter and probably melt it, plus fire danger.
