Engine Masters - X vs H vs Straight Exhaust

-
I took the difficult route, just for the sound, not for performance,,,X pipe,,, only comment I've ever gotten is "sounds awesome", especially when I'm on it.

i just got straight pipes because it's cheaper and idgaf
much the same as I have posted all along, neither one of them are worth their weight ! collector size pipes to ur choice of mufflers, dumped will out perform all of them, and weigh less.

mine is "straight" - no X, no H - I did have to "tone it down" with a set of resonators though :D - every time I have gone to the local Cars and Coffee someone has asked if I have a Hemi in it (which makes me smile)... and it goes like hell too - - so no complaints and no changes coming either..

Not carrying that extra weight EITHER.

....uh the pypes system i am running is fantastic... there is no extra weight, the x pipe doesn't capture the tranny. i had it welded together with collectors from the mufflers to the tail pipes, for easy removal. and the sound is mean as hell.

And once again, those guys tested at exactly one parameter; namely WOT.
That test was a colossal waste of time, designed I think, to garner views.

You are the last guy i would have thought that would buy in to the H pipe theory AJ.

Gibbson mwa? Wait that sounds familiar......... oh yeah duh lol, i hear them at least once a week. Straight thru for me as well, i like to be able to drop the drive shaft or trans without messing with exhaust. Would of been interesting to see them compare duals to a single exit exhaust

Engines are not all the same. Something that doesn't show gains on one may show gains on another.

Nothing in that video to support any position other than that engine peak numbers at WOT didn't seem to care what was hung on it for exhaust.

but there was no real gain from 3000 rpm up....

Exactly. I'd suspect there is something wrong

I have had a H pipe on my exhaust with Sonic Turbo mufflers since 1988. Same 2 1/4" pipes. This system has always worked well for me and sounded great too.

Not sure what the point is here. That engine didn't care what was hung on it. One showed a slight improvement below peak, yippeee.

I can point out a bunch of racers that have put an X on a car and it picked up even dragging muffler weight with it, Myron being one of them.

Taking one test as some type of gospel regarding whether an item works or not is absolute folly! Only way to know on a particular car is to test, test and test some more. There is NO definitive answer whether only one of those choices of exhaust systems is right for every car. No can do.

Hm. What I saw in the vid was the following.
Both the H and X added 4-5 ft-lbs at WOT to just below 5000 rpm
The X added no more than 2 hp at the top. Practically insignificant on this engine.
They all agreed the overall sound was different in each setup - to some people that's important

Was this a complete thorough emperical analysis? Of course not. Did it even consider the basic premises behind the concept of tuned exhausts? No. That's for the guys looking for the last hp or torque, class racers, super techs and engineers. Larry Maeux and Calvin Elston have shared a wealth of information on those subjects - a lot of it on Speedtalk forums. Anyone that interested should go there.

This was good for the typical guy/gal that wants to know what happens with a bolt on. Sadly, many will think this is what will happen, rather than what may happen. It takes more to know the variables, and neither the magazines or the mass market manufacturers want to get into that.
