There is a beautiful blue Demon in the classified section and farther down in his description he mentions a slant six, and 7.25 axle. When I think of a Demon I think 340, 8.75 , 727 or 4 speed. I'm not questioning the integrity of the seller, I just need educated on what makes a Demon a real Demon, and is it denoted as such on the fender tag?

The Dodge Demon came in a few different flavors. Yes, you could order Demon's with /6, 318, and 340's. They were also available with bench seats and ralley interiors. Fender tag should describe how the car was optioned! Thx, 65'

Dodge's "Duster" from 1971 to 1972. Like its cross brand twin, it could come in may different options and trims.

I bought a new Demon in 71 - slant, 3 on the tree, bench seat

The first letter in the vin should be "L" which denotes Dart/Demon. Second digit which on my car is "M" denotes the package level. I don't remember exact build numbers but if I remember there were like 10000 total Demons built in 71 and 8800 in 72. I know on the 71 there were like a total of 4800 or 4900 which were 340 cars, the rest were /6 etc. The 5th digit in the vin denotes engine. 340's were "H". The 3rd and 4th digit which on my Demon is 29 denotes 2 door sports hard top. I believe this is what tells you it's a Demon and not a Dart.

Basically what makes it a demon is the "dodge" badge on the front

Back then (70-72) demon was a model, not a trim level

A Demon is just a Duster with Dart sheetmetal up front. Just a model, not a performance level. Production #'s looked like this...

1971 Demon
Fastback Coupe: 69,861
340 Fastback Coupe: 10,098
Total 1971 Demons: 79,959

1972 Demon
Fastback Coupe: 39,880
U.S 340 Fastback Coupe: 8,700
Total 1972 Demons: 48,580

So, as you can see, the vast majority of Demons were not 340 cars. In fact, the vast majority of them were actually /6 cars.

I still think Demons command a little higher price than a Duster, tit for tat. parts specific to the Demon are harder to find and generally cost more $.

340 4 speeds are the only way to go.

history: duster came out in '70, the Valiant duster, a success, so Dodge cried foul , and they got the Demon in 71 ! lasted thru 72 till the name Demon was criticized by the folks against satan worship! thus came the 73 dodge sport.
funny how the 2 demons I had didn't make me want to worship the devil!!

Hey 72 Dart. There ya go I've learnt something ref my steering wheel logo. Didn't know it was a Plymouth logo. What should it look like. I'll be getting the tuff steering will too soon. Rim of the factory wheel is too narrow. If I drive for too long in the Demon I start to get cramps in my fingers. A good one here in Aus costs around $500, so they're not cheap.

Cheers,
Glenn.

Wanna hear something that will astound you. When I went into my local roads authority to get the Demon registered in my name in cost $666 I **** you not, (the no. of the beast), I have the rego papers to prove it. My wife had a strong Catholic upbringing & she won't get in the Demon without her crucifix, (lol I did make that last sentence up).
Something else that will astound you, she did hide the crucifix in the Demon without telling me once & that's when things starting breaking in the Demon. When she realised this she removed it & everything was fine after that.

Cheers
Glenn.

I've never been clear on just what the differences are between a Demon and a "Dart Sport"

the Demon was the dodge variant of the duster, made from 71-72, then in 73 the Demon went to being the dart sport. basically the same car but getting some updates , just like the duster got updtes every year of its production. clear as mud!!???

Why would you say that? The only demon specific parts I can think of is the tail panel, tail lights, and emblems. The car from the cowl back is a duster and there forward is all dart parts.
The 73 dart sport is much different only because all the models were getting major changes at that time.
