I think if you are getting left and right pressure steer from that adjustment the sweet spot is there. I can't get it with the bolts loose enough to adjust by hand. With the bolts barely loosened so tapping with a small hammer moves it a hair per tap gets me close enough.
For what its worth, The very best fellow service tech I've ever known couldn't successfully renew a worn out steering gear in a old Dodge p/u and believe me, He tried. Wasn't his first rodeo either. Seems something about this particular box was just too far worn. Therefore I would never attempt it. I just buy reman'd. Good luck with it.
