Welding the Solar Eclipse

-
Since the Moon is constantly rotating on its own axis, there is no area of the planetoid which is in permanent darkness, and the far side of the Moon is only completely devoid of sunlight during a Full Moon – when the Sun is facing the Moon with the Earth in between.

That was one of those type before thinking moments I had.
If I had thought about it.....
Of course we knew what was everywhere on the surface before we sent Neil Armstrong so it must rotate and show its back side sometimes.
Just like some people. (Humor)

You can never see the dark side (actually "far side") of the Moon from Earth. The same side of the Moon always faces Earth. Moon and Earth are in "synchronous rotation". We only know what the far side looks like because we mapped it with satellites in the '50s and '60s that orbited the Moon .

I though about satellite mapping as I was getting into the car for work.
Been busy since then.
That eclipse was a big dud here.
Even at over 90 percent it didn't get dark really.
So I understand that there is a side of them moon we never see.
Which is what I thought.
But it isn't dark there all their time.

Turned out pretty well here as it did go 100%. Birds chirping and insects making noise. Got a decent pic of the diamond ring

I happened to think about the eclipse yesterday while out in the garage. I got a welding -hand held protector thing w/ my mig welder when I bought it. Never used it , bought a self darkening helmit. I took the hand held thing outside and took a quick glance at the sun, ended up staring at it for about 5 seconds. Then looked at the lense and it was a 10, but seemed darker than my helmit. I then went back in the garage and didn`t experience any spots before my eyes, Guess I`ll try it , if I remember, and the weather is co-operating. ====DON`T TRY THIS AT HOME ????
Exactly....I have an old welding helmet with a 10 lens....worked great up here, but we're not in the "totality" zone, and I didn't stare at the sun for a long time...just short glimpses.

worked like a charm, no problems.

The fog and low clouds must have added up to about a #11 this morning. A perfect little crescent shining through the cloud cover when Oregon was pitch black.

The eclipse glasses are now like lottery tickets, just tons of waste. Recycle
