I met a guy at a car show who said he was thinking of buying a 69 Barracuda that he was told was rare by an appraiser. Being a Chevy guy he was looking for information on what the car was. When we got to the fender tag he said it had special handling. I thought Formula S. He said it was on a tag. Here's the pics he sent me. I think he said it is a convertible, I haven't decoded the other tag yet. Has anyone seen or heard of this designation "special handling".

Yes, i've seen them.
Actually, i have one that i took off of a cop car that was in the junk yard years ago.
It looks identical to the one in your pictures.
Not sure of other cars, maybe show or promo cars?

i've seen those before.. not sure on what though... you may want to post that over on moparts.. there are a few guys that can spot a fake a mile away.

Special handling as in suspension...... or as in it was some kind of special order car and was not treated like the run of the mill assembly line car?

Interesting for sure, but not necessarily more valuable.

Looks legit,,but i dont see the vague "crease" in the special handling tag,,from folding the tag up to paint underneath it, ,i see the crease on the left bottom of the regular tag,,,im probably way off ,,,im certainly no expert on anything,,but thats something a few people have told me over the years

I've seen that exact tag before on a Charger R/T and was told by a local expert that it was just an unusual order that required more attention. But I think we need a current expert to chime in.

Special handling is for suspension like a police car package? Hard to believe it would be on a Barracuda but it might have bigger torsion bars, sway bars or extra leaves in the rear

Special Handling tag has nothing to do with the suspension. Common tag on fleet vehicles.

Quote from Alaskan TA:
The special handling fender tags are common to police cars, lots of folks have saved the tags from salvage yards over the years & added them to their cars.

I have never seen an original Hamtramck or LA built car with one of these tags, they noted their special handling cars on broadcast sheets instead.

The 'special handling' had to do with the vehicle build, it had nothing to do with being able to 'handle' corners at high speed.

There's nothing particularly rare that would effect pricing or desirablity about that 69 Barracuda 318, Console, auto that was originally painted Y3 yellow gold (same as '70 DY3 cream). Think of Y3 as manilla folder color.

Car is now color changed to a metallic tan.

What is odd is the H6F interior code. If so, that is for white and green two tone is not recommended with Y3 cream.

Could that not-recommended color combination have triggered the "Special Handing" ?? I doubt it since I don't see any Y special order codes.

But that would be better answered by Alaskan TA or 6bblgt

To me it looks like they added the tag when they repainted/color changed it.

Here is another Y3 cream car:

H6F interior has these color combos:

Green: carpet, dash, headliner, and console if equipped (this Barracuda does)

White: seats, door panels, arm rests.

What is odd is the H6V interior code. Or is that last letter really a V ? If so, that is for white and red two tone and says not available for convertible.

special handling refers to non standard, as in an unusual paint combination. I had a mid 70's huge boat Fury, which had a special handling tag. I believe it was because it was painted two-tone. It was seafoam green, with white painted (not vinyl) roof, so it required special masking.

IF H6F is correct, it would be a non recommended interior color with the Y3 cream exterior paimt.

But the exterior paint itself would be standard, so I'm not thinking the extra tag.

Nonetheless, value this 69 318 auto orignally with not very desirable color now switched to another not very desirable color accordingly.

I thought you said he was looking to buy it?

Did he already buy it?

Looks to have some mild mods: rims, 'cuda scoops added, spoiler.

Looks to be a nice $12K-17K car
since I saw him and the pics ,Yes he owns it now. I think he said it's sportin' a 340 now. I'll get to check it out more Sept 24 at Last Chance Show in Welland Ontario.

There was a special handling tag on my 73 Scamp when I bought it, never could figure out what it meant.

I’ve taken a crack at decoding the fender tag for you. The fender tags are read from left to right, bottom to top. (No guarantees it is 100% correct however!!)

E44: 318, 2 bbl, 230 HP
D31: A904 Auto transmission
B: Plymouth Barracuda
H: High price class
29: 2 door sports hardtop (A convertible would have a “27” code here)
F: 318 cid engine
9: 1969
B: Hamtramck assembly plant
134030: Sequence number

Y3: “Yellow Gold” Body Paint
Y3: “Yellow Gold” roof paint
H: High trim grade
6: Vinyl Bucket seats
F: White vinyl seats, green carpet, instrument panel, steering wheel and headlining
F8: dark green upper door frame
908: Sept 8, 1969 scheduled production date
066114: Vehicle Order Number

A01: Light Package (ash receiver, glove box, headlights-on warning, ignition switch light with time delay, hood mounted turn signals, trunk )
B51: Power Brakes
C16: Console
C55: Bucket Seats
G11: Tinted glass, all windows
G33: Left hand remote mirror

H51: Air conditioning
L31: Hood mounted turn signal indicators
M21: Roof drip rail moldings
M31: Belt moldings
R11: AM Radio, 2 watt
V78: Accent Stripes deleted

END: End of codes

When I enhanced the code plate photo, it definitely is a H6F interior code (not H6V)
As some others noted, the "Special Handling" tag was on some executive or show cars and also some cop cars. Can't be sure if this tag is original to the car or not just based on a photo.

A special handling tag usually refers to a procedure not done on the line, such as buffed paint, a special color, 2 tone paint, or some other such trim variation! If this car has a non recommended interior/exterior color combination, it could be because the upper door paint does not match the exterior color and needed to be diverted to the paint shop for hand painting!

It is not a special car just because of the tag, it's just a 318 Cuda fastback, 1000's of them were made that way! It is special however in the fact that it's a cool car, and most owners of it thought it special enough to make sure that it still is!!

Hamtramck did not use the Special Handling tags on any car.

They are from mid to late 1970s (pre 1980) cop cars.

What brand wheels are those ?
The wheels are a custom wheel 16" with 4 1/2 bc, 225/55/16. He doesn't know the brand name. Its a 340, 904 with lock up converter, 2.94 gears, with larger discs all around, made to be a cruiser.
thanks everyone for the info....I'll pass it on.
