All I can say is Wow!!! Started with Factory qjet, then Eddy 1406, then a Quick Fuel Slayer 600. The QFT seemed to run good but needed constant adjustments. Just installed a 650 thunder AVS tonight. Idles unbelievably smooth, hit the throttle and instant tire spin, and pulls like a rocket to 5500rpm on my mild 360 in a 5500lb 4we. Very impressive carb in case anyone is considering one.So far only adusted idle mixture and speed. I'm sold on this one!!!!

I TOTALLY agree. I have a moderately modified 340 putting out about 375HP. I had a 750 Eddy on it. At first the 750 ran a bit too rich cruising the streets, so I decreased the primary jets by two notches, and it ran great. Then the Carb sat in a box for almost three years while I blew my car apart to restore and paint it. It never ran quite as good after that. So I bought a 650 Thunder and WOW. It ran FANTASTIC right out of the box.

Yes it is.

Carter/Edelbrock carbs.

Allways underestimated
Rock solid, long lasting performance.

How some people get frustrated with this simple mixed is beyond me.

Been running one for a while now very impressed on the moderate built teener but I don't know if it will be too small for the 408 build.

I bolted a 800 Thunder series onto my 500 hp 408 and the air/fuel mixture was almost perfect right out of the box through the entire rpm range. I'm struggling a little getting it to lean out at idle but I highly recommend these carbs to anyone who wants to set it and forget it.

I haven't Done anything but give the mixture screws a quarter turn, and slow down the fast idle. This carb is very impressive as far as being smooth and pulling hard at any rpm. Fuel mileage is WAY UP too!!! This carb is 10x the carb the 1406 or 1405 is

I actually bought the remanufactured, electric choke model and saved a few bucks. Appearance is like new and it works great for now. If edelbrock rebuilt it it's probably just as good as knew. I heard a Lot of their reman carbs are ones that were returned because someone ordered one too big or had a simple problem they didn't wanna adjust out

Are any of your cars Torqueflites, and was there any extra carburetor linkage required? I have a BPE throttle plate with a leaking Holly 750, and I am considering getting a 650 Thunder. Thanks

Mines an auto, with a performer rpm intake. I bought the $10 edelbrock throttle lever adapter, absolutely no issues hooking it all up. Piece of cake

They come with a 3/8 barb fitting. I spent $20 for the 3/8 chrome line that runs down the side of carb and has the 1/8" hole for fuel pressure gauge or it comes with a if. Fits great and don't leak

I'd definitely stay away from the afb type 1405 or 1406 carbs. I've had several over the years a,d never was too impressed with them. The avs seems to be a major improvement. If the extra money is an issue, buy a reman from summit. Looks like new, ru,s perfect and still has a warranty for about the price of a new 1400 series.power starts right away, and significant gain in fuel mileage

It certainly is!!!! Especially in this day and age. Seems it don't matter how much you pay or what brand you buy, still a good chance you're gonna end up with crap!

I had a Carter AVS on my 1969 Dart Swinger 340 4 speed, ran great all the time...

Same thing my dad had on his. He put a 780 Holley on. Made more power but needed constant adjustments and accelerator pump diaphragm s

But that's after he built an 11:1 solid lifter 340 28th 4 speed and 4.88 gear. Not sure the AVS was up for thatcombo

Wonder what's different inside those carbs?

Yes sir they were. Edelbrock claims 650 I'm now but who knows

There is a thread on actual cfm of the Carters. From what I remember of the later ones, they were larger in cfm.

The small AVS is 630 cfm and the larger AVS was 750 cfm as per the old Carter-Federal Mougal tech line.

The last of the AFB carbs were 625 & 750.

Edelbrock has the AFB in 500, 600, 750 & 800 while the AVS comes in 500, 650 & 800. Of also have no idea how they get 650 out of the AVS styled carb. I don't see how the missing choke linkage as well as the reduced area from the counter wieghted air door to the spring loaded air door add up to that much.

An old boss who f mine loaned me his AVS after I broke the base plate of the Holley I was running. And that was it. Soooo much better. Not the same top end but much better everywhere else.

I spoke to an Edelbrock tech when i bought my 650 Thunder and he told me there were many changes
made internally to the new Thunder series and they flow better and higher than the older models.
