The safety neutral switch in my 904 keeps going bad. It just started, I've replaced it three times now. What could be causing this?

I had the same problem. Are you getting your switches at Napa? They are garbage. I finally found a good original out of a junk trans. and haven't had a problem since.

Not sure where my mechanic has been ordering them from. But I'll ask when I call tomorrow.

If your mechanic has been ordering them then he's probably making a markup on them.
He should take care of it.
Just what I would expect if it were me, and what he should do for getting failing parts.

Are you sure they are just failing and not being pushed to hard from being in to far ? the replacement made by Standard which I believe is the only switch available is too long internally . I had to space mine back almost 1/8 of an inch with washers to get my reverse lights to function and I would bet being too long that way probably slams the switch back into the back of the housing . The one I replaced was cracked three ways in the ceramic on the connector end , bad enough to seep fluid actually which is what led to me replacing it and getting a bug up my backside about finally getting those lights to work .

Not sure what's causing it yet, but the new one is going in Friday. The garage I go to knows they are long, but maybe not by how much. I'm not paying for the replacement, my mechanic is good people and is doing what it takes to fix it.
Is it the middle wire on the switch that is the neutral switch? And it's effectivelya ground right? I'm thinking about putting a toggle switch in, incase it fails again, for ease or start when it fails. I'd just splice the wire and run it to a ground through a toggle. Allowing me to at least get home, sort of a back up.

A short piece of wire w/ alligator clips would jump the brown wire terminal at starter relay to battery neg' or any chassis ground point for temporary bypass of the trans mounted switch. Of course the starter would operate while trans is in gear. Just saying there's no real need for long lengths of wire and a toggle switch.
raise the hood, attach jumper, done.

That's kind of the reason I want a switch in the car. At the very least, so I can have my foot on the brakes.
You don't understand. The jumper wouldn't activate the starter. Nevermind

Redfish is right. The jumper from the brown wire to ground itself does not start the car. All it does is bypass the neutral switch. You still have to turn the key to get it to start
