Owning and driving old cop cars...:)

Those 5.0, Florida, Mustangs were neat, and quick. I haven't seen one, lately.

To the best of my knowledge, the Michigan State police still has a sport fury in use...but it's been about 2 years since I last saw it

Friend of mine in high school in the early 80s, had a retire 2 door Polara detective'detective's car. Certified speedo, 360, tq. For a land yacht, that thing was quick.

After Dad left the Chrysler dealer and became the mechanic main tainting a fleet a taxis, the taxi company owner started buying retired cop cars for his fleet. They went thru many Gran Furys and Diplomas before going with Caprices. A couple of the highway patrol 90's Caprices came thru with the Corvette engines in them and had a larger bolt pattern wheel than the regular Caprices. Those cars, although I didn't like them, we're fast. We would make a repair, drive the "test drive route" to make sure there were no cops, and then open it up on the way back. Comparing one to the other, the Furys and Dips felt a lot more solid and firm compared to the Chevys. But the Chevys easily out ran them - yes we did.....lol

I've almost bought two but didn't.

1st was a 73 Polara 400-4 unmarked with package tray and grille lights.
Had all the cop goodies- original white paint with blue interior 4D with front buckets, no carpet, outside only back door handles, radio, high idle, shot gun rack, etc. 50 cent piece sized rust hole in one quarter. Asking $500 in 1989. I did buy the orange air cleaner for $20 for my 70 Super Bee. I couldn't justify two big block cars on a 20 year old's income and no garage.

2nd was a 74 Satellite 400-4 GA lieutenant's unmarked car Gold 4D with tan bucket and no carpet int. All the cop goodies but no cage. Had original paint, but some suspicious crusty rust in unusual places. Asking $800 in 2011.

One of my friends had an '84-ish AHB Diplomat around 1990. Unmarked with 318 and quadrajet. Wasn't a terrible dog like I've heard others say. Not a rocket, just a 318 powered M body.

The USAF SP where I grew up had Volares and Aspens with 6 cyls.

The township had 4 fairmonts, 3 with 6 cyl and 1 with a 5.0!

My uncle had a friend who worked at the city garage circa 1967.
He had a typed letter authorizing him to exceed the speed limit to 120 MPH for testing!
He said the 427 impala was pretty tough to beat at highway speeds.
Not sure if they had Mopars back then. Dayton was famous for oddball cop cars including 75 nova and 73 grand am!

A nephew of mine, when he saw my Charger, related this story. He was living in Oregon when his local PD started replacing crown vics with Chargers. He was refueling his car one day when one of the new Chargers pulled in.
After acknowledging the officer, he asked how he liked the Charger. The officer said it wasn't uncommon for people to try to outrun the crown vics, and succeed! He said no one tries to outrun the Charger!

Drive a white 2009 Charger Pursuit, some drivers slow down when you catch them on 2 lane roads!
I'm sure when it's a little older it'll be treated as "just an old car"
Lots of fun to drive, stone stock! 170k miles.

I used to sit across the street from the mayor’s house at about 2am and wait for someone to come hauling *** by. Turn traction control off and rip by his house smoking tires sideways with lights and sirens blasting then jump the tracks. I broke the motor mounts twice. Pretty fun cars though.

I always felt like the rear of the car was too light.

Well that explains a lot! Motor mount BOLTS were broken on my car when I got it, engine sat a little crooked.
