May be a simple question, but I need an answer. I am installing a 1972 340 block engine into a 1965 Dodge Dart GT and, hopefully, using a 1966 904 behind it. I know I will need to make some modifications on the shifter and shifting linkage, but my main question is: Will the 66 904 transmission bolt up to the 72 340 block engine. Thanks for the advice. Old Dart 66.

I HAVE MY ANSWER, AND THANK YOU TO THOSE THAT HELPED ME OUT. GREAT PLACE TO BE....FABO....KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE ALWAYS WILLING TO SHARE THEIR SKILLS AND TALENTS. APPRECIATE YOUR TIME. Old Dart 66

Jerry, once you install the adapter bushing in the crank pocket, the smaller snout of the 66 torque converter will fit the larger opening of the crank without trying to move around. Then the transmission will have no problem bolting up. Hopefully You can see the bushing in the end of this slant crank. This 74 motor had a 65 Transmission behind it. The bushing is available from several sources including @Charrlie_S on this forum.

The transmission will bolt up but the problem is that the early 904 has the small torque converter register. 340 crankshaft has the large diameter register. I believe some 67 904's used the large register. 68-72 definitely did. 65'

Thanks. Good information to know. Just needing the bushing, so I will get that ordered. About 8 weeks from the engine/transmission install. Just thought I would makes sure I am on the right page with this. Thanks to all for the help on this.

I never saw where the OP said whether the original engine was a slant or V8. If it's a slant, no way will the transmission bolt to a 340.

Yes, Sorry, my error. The 66 904 was off of a 273. For sure. Thanks. Old Dart 66
