I've heard that but usually used in reference to when someone went out of business, IE Studebaker, AMC, etc

If we made any different ones on the assembly line that were not interchangeable, we referred to them as "orphans"...

If you have to modify a part, (like milling an intake to fit the heads), then the intake is no longer interchangeable with the other engines... You have created an "orphan"...
