Get under the car and look at the area around the sending unit, directly behind the differential. If you are unsure, take pics and post them, if your tank is original 50 year old, I would replace it unless the car has been a pampered, garage kept, low mileage original car. Even then, the tank can still be full of crap. New tanks are not expensive and well worth the effort IMO.
