Take a small strap of alu or sreel and drill a 3/8" hole in one end and a hole on the opposite end the dia of the spring wire. Mount it with the bottom bolt of the z bar pivot, adj accordingly, enough to have a little play between the bearing and press plate.
As for your pedal, I put a weak spring in place of the overcenter spring, it helps a little.
