Lacquer paint is solvent based. Reduced to be usable viscosity by another solvent and spray away.
Enamel and better Acrylic enamel. Reduced, and hardener is used as a catalyst.
Probably what you are calling epoxy witch it is not. And probably what you used 20 years ago.
