What cam to use in a 318

By middle ground I meant below that is more RV type cams and above is getting more street strip type cams. It’s kind of crossover point it’s not quite rv and not street strip.

    What gets a car moving?

I think he means you need X power to do Y work, eg.. 40 hp to cruise 55 mph, but the torque of the engine can be practical any amount as long were making 40 hp, so the amount of hp is what's overall important the ratio of torque and rpm can very wildly.

    What gets a car moving?

Thanks I knew worrying about calculated vs measure made no sense just didn't know exactly how to say it, I knew the dyno basically measure power cause it measures torque and rpms.

    What gets a car moving?

I know it's just huge pet peeve of mine, I think it's also the bases to all the smaller cid vs larger cid, strangle an engine for velocity etc.. debates. And it's really a super basic concept it really shouldn't be an issue.

    What gets a car moving?

Here's a example of a situation where we have only rotational force with no rotation being applied to the driveline. Your stopped on a slight uphill grade and the idle is enough to hold the car in place without the brakes, so the engine is still making power but the torque converter is...

    What gets a car moving?

I don't understand why you think it being measured or calculated makes any difference. And this does not prove you point either, "you cannot have hp without torque" in other words you cannot have rotation without rotational force, Yes True, and "you can have torque without hp, Think of a torque...

    What gets a car moving?

The reason they say that is simple even though the ultimate goal is more hp which is basically more fuel and air going through your engine at any given moment, which takes engine displacement's VE% over time rpm, you can figure it out mathematically for a ballpark hp. Take the so call carb...

    What gets a car moving?

Even though it don't make a bunch of hp, it does make it at cruising rpm so instead of dropping gears to get into the power band, you just got to give a little more gas when needed cause your already In the power band.

    What gets a car moving?

Pushing x foot steps per minute :)

    What gets a car moving?

Yes, But what a lot don't seem to get its a rotational force but its not rotation its self that would be hp. Eg.. 500 lbs-ft at 4000 rpms, 500 lbs-ft of torque is the average per revolution so basically each revolution. Hp is the sum of all 4000 revolutions 381 hp why as torque moves up in rpm...

    What gets a car moving?

Bottom line is a moving car is work and it takes power to do that work, I don't think you would disagree with that. But most knowing that insist that one of the ingredients of power is some how more reasonable than power to do that work which makes zero sense.

    What gets a car moving?

Torque is the force of the combustion process applied to the piston then to the rod, then the throw of the crank turning into rotational force aka Torque but once it starts rotating were now talking torque over rpm which is Hp. Again a turning crank is rpm Again meaningless Which statement...

    Another 318 set up

You've collected more then enough information to do that, a basic 4 bbl with duals and a good tune is probably all you need, start there and if you need more go from there a mod at a time until your satisfied.

    What gets a car moving?

Dyno'd in KW's shows a better separation of torque and power, the acceleration of a car obviously follows the hp curve and not the relatively flat torque curve.

    Another 318 set up

The Best analogy I can think to explain my point of view, is electrical so watts = hp, amps = torque and volts = rpm. So your buying an amplifier for a stereo and to be able to reach a certain loudness , Watts how much power the amp makes would be you main concern for it’s ability for loudness...

    Another 318 set up

True and for most street guy's were dealing in a fairly narrow rpm range idle to 5000/6000 rpms generally. So yes more torque you can gain in this range especially in the high rpms of it the more power you'll have, but really the goal is more power. I just seen what Newbomb Turk just asked you...

    What gets a car moving?

What it seems like most think torque handles low rpms and hp handles high rpms, I thinks it from how dyno graphs are talked about generally under 5252 rpms we talk about torque cause it's visually easier to read and verbally easier to talk about, a good torque curve obviously means good under...

    What gets a car moving?

You said, what we've been saying previously was bullshit, to sum that up was basically it takes power to move your car not torque alone, then you said that just torque moves your car implying not torque and rpm (power) like I've been saying. Then went on about some book and pointed out that it...

    What gets a car moving?

Not by itself takes rpm too, why do torque and rpm have equal representation in the calculation of hp if it doesn't have as much of an effect on hp ? What do you think a car moving is ? Distance over time. Which has zero bearing on anything, plus you can measure hp by the work that is...

What cam to use in a 318

It's kind of considered middle ground for a street cam, above this level each step up you generally tend to start really trading bottom end power for top end power and gears stall starts to become more and more necessary. Obviously not set into stone.
