340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Not to confuse the discussion but these original 1965 273 rocker shafts only have one oiling hole per rocker (the rocker has 2) and it is oriented towards the pushrod side. The notches on these shafts are half moon shaped.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

I'll also add that I have always looked for the location where oil shoots up to the shaft. Keep the oil pump turning at that location and you should see oil exiting each rocker somewhere even if not so much at the top. BTW, what rockers are you running? Are they 273 adjustable rockers with a...

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

I would be surprised if the rocker shafts themselves are clogged. You could probe the mounting holes with electrical wire and carb cleaner to see if anything is in there. You can check the shaft exit oiling holes by removing the rockers and taking a look. You should carb cleaner the rockers...

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

So, as a minimum, the passenger side shaft appears to be installed incorrectly as the notch should be in the back.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Must be one loose motor to have to run drill for 2 minutes. Like @abodyjoe said, I've never even used a drill. I just turned the pump drive with a hex rod and small ratchet by hand. At the right position...gush. If all is assembled correctly it should easily oil.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Check your rocker shafts for correct orientation. From the 1970 service manual in 340 section: "Install rocker arm and shaft assemblies with "NOTCH" on end of rocker shaft pointing to centerline of engine and toward front of engine on the left bank and to the rear on right bank..."

    "gripper pattern" u bolt question

Here's what aggravated me. Picture of my back braced 8-3/4 housing being fab'd. What you see is a piece of driveshaft tubing I welded to the housing to shore up future indentations. You can see where the clamp force is concentrated. Doesn't mean the housing is junk though. If the housing ends...

    "gripper pattern" u bolt question

This is exactly correct. A round shaped u-bolt on the clamped area will indent an 8-3/4 housing with factory torque even though that torque is low.

Project "Chihuahua" '65 Formula S Restoration "Estilo Mexicano"

Dibbons, I did finally find the GZ-88148 clips I bought from Laysons. They appear to be correct (although lacking the pad). They fit nicely in the trim. The 2nd picture shows one in the trim next to one of my factory clips.

Is it ok to copy a W5 head and make it better or are we just mad at Speedmaster

Is this what happened? I thought I read the part was marked "Broader Performance" or the equivalent trademark on it.

    Parts Cache

You can store a lot of parts on shelves of the type you referenced. I think I bought mine from Lowes or HD. They rescued me from a lot of clutter.

See post #286. Did you try the GZ-88148 clips that Rick posted? I remember buying those from Laysons but I'll be damned if I can find them to compare to my originals. I think I just bought them and stored them away somewhere without comparing.

the USS New Jersey battle ship.

Read here on the history of the USS IOWA and the tragic accident that claimed 47 lives: H-029-4 USS Iowa Turret Explosion I am sure there are different accounts of the facts. But regardless, so sad what happened in Turret 2 that day on 19 April 1989.
  29. DC 340

the USS New Jersey battle ship.

Absolutely. Some time ago here on FABO random pictures thread, I found this picture described as the USS New Jersey passing through Panama Canal in 1984. Just awesome.

I have that same photo. As I recall that was a 15 gun broadside blast of both 16" and 5" guns. Strictly business going on there. A great part of history.
