Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

@Inertia The Friday night street legal shoot out we participate in to do these 1/4 mile passes at mission raceway does NOT allow open headers or un muffled cars. It's a street car shootout where it's always heads up and people are just racing their cars and having fun. You can get 9 or 10 passes...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

Thanks for the input about heads, I'm also considering port matching my current j heads and doing a light blend and polish to increase a bit of flow without changing things to drastically. As for my car going faster I really need to take it to the track again and hit it harder off the line as I...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

The original intent was a discussion about heads. My car is not strictly a drag car it's a street car I like to take to the strip. I don't even think most people responding to this are reading the whole thread. Seems like you are just arguing with each other and making assumptions about driving...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

I do have adjustable shocks front and rear in the car. The tire size is 235 60 15 so they aren't big tires and I've been considering adding clatracks. That being said I haven't had tire shake or jump yet off the line. It just plants and I go. This season I will be setting my 2 step up so I can...

Maybe an xe284h would be a better cam, would have to cut the guides a beleive if it went in the stock j heads. But I would also probably need to go with 3.73 or 3.9 gears out back if I jump the cam up much

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

Goals for the car is just a fast street car that I take to the track. The nearest track is off the island I live on so I can't realistically get to a track more than a few times a year. Main goal is just improving speed and having a fun street car. Other things I've thought of putting on are...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

Yeah I've tuned the spray to make sure the fuel ring is in the right place and there is no black specks on the porcelain either. It seems to be at just the right spot for the spray at least. I'm gonna work on the carb this season with Inertia to try and dial it in a bit better but up till.now...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

I'm sure that I can leave harder. It was my first time on drag slicks and was working my way up in rpm to see how far before I spin. This season I will set up the 2 step so I can adjust it to the edge

Not professionaly tuned but according to afr it seems ok? 12.6 at WOT? What's your recommendation

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

I find it interesting how far we have gotten from the original intent of this post. It's a question about heads. And it had turned into a bunch of guys saying that I'm slow..... like I said before a couple times. It's been down the 1/4 in one event. Of course it needs to be dialed in and I can...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

You have a 360, my best 60' I posted above. It was 2.0, 1/8 8.5@86, 1/4 13.1 @ 108. I can probably shave a bit off my 60' but as I said above I've only done the 1/4 for one event. There is no track close to me anymore. So fine tuning launch rpm isn't easily available. This thread is originally...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

Haven't done a no spray yet because I've only done the 1/4 at one event. There is no track close to me. My friend with similar setup and no nos runs 13.8. I launch at about 2500-3000 I'm gonna run a 2 step next time I go out and tune that. I shift about 6250 because my cam is good from 1600-5800...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

The car has 12.6 afr at WOT same afr while under spray. 37* timing before spray and down ro 34* while spraying. I tuned that off the spark plugs as maximum before you get black specks on the porcelain. I can drive...... My friend has the same setup as me with no spray and runs 13.8

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

I'm already spraying approximately 30% of peak power. When I hit it around 3250rpm I'm probably close to 50% don't really want to hit it much harder than that. I have jets to go to 125hp and higher. But I want to upgrade heads to for more power regardless. I think it would be a fun upgrade to do...

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

2.0 60' 13.1 at 108mph im running micky street slicks 235/60r15 if I can increase horsepower and get a better 60' that would be even better. I've always wanted to get better heads and increase some power. And lower the weight on front end too

I would have to ask Inertia as he was the one who helped me assemble that years ago. I beleive it was the stock amount for the motor. Does .010 sound correct. @Inertia

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

So these heads in theory would bump my compression up considerably then? I mostly street it around but go to the track several times a year. On the street I give it the beans on a regualr basis too.

Cylinder head discussion 340 with stock above deck pistons

I have a 340 block with approximately 10.25:1 compression bored .040 over, j heads with 72 cc chambers, comp cam xe268h, air gap intake, holley 780, Doug's headers, and a 100 shot of nitrous. 3.55 and a close ratio 4speed. It ran 13.1 last season with the spray. I'm wanting to get a bit more out...

    Nitrous on a 340 100 shot

I think Inertia has a pin set. If not I'll pick up a set so we can measure all the holes in the carb. And I'll probably end up needing a thousandths inch drill bit set. It's interesting for me to be getting this deep into carburetor setup as I haven't gone this deep into their actual function yet.

    Nitrous on a 340 100 shot

Got some help from Inertia today at his shop, we messed with carb a bit and figured out it was a bad pcv valve that was causing some of the rich condition at idle. Changed it to a different pcv he had laying around and messed with the mixture screws, that brought the idle up to 13.0. So that was...

    Nitrous on a 340 100 shot

That's great info, thanks. Hopefully on Wednesday me and Inertia can get it dialed in better. Also I can't wait to get the new street slicks on and see how that feels on the launch!

    Nitrous on a 340 100 shot

Not yet, I've made 4 hits on it so far but it's been raining a bit here. I did just purchase some mickey thompson street slicks I need to put on next week because when I hit nitrous from first it just shredded the tires in first and secound gear. When I'm mounting the tires at inertia's shop...

    [WANTED] 8 1/4 sure grip/ track lock

WANTED sure grip or track lock for an 8 1/4 rear end. I blew up the spring and plates inside my track lock unit this winter. Need carrier or if someone has the plates and springs that go in the carrier that would work aswell.

    Nitrous on a 340 100 shot

Good idea and with Chris being in America on the westcoast maybe I'll get lucky finding an 8 1/4 sure grip or track lock. Also I might bring the car over this week if you wouldnt mind checking the tune on my carb now that I've messed with things a bit.

What is too low for an air fuel mix when idling? or driving in a high gear at low rpm in an attempt to save fuel?

    Nitrous on a 340 100 shot

...rpm it was 11.7-12 ish..... it idles at 12.5-12.8 now that I pulled more timing out of the top but added 5 degrees on the bottom. Now I have it set to 16*-31* and I'll try that and see how it is wirh nitrous. While I was timing that in I idled it for 10 minutes ish and the plug looks a bit...

    Nitrous on a 340 100 shot

...another hit of nitrous today and snapped a pic of the fresh plugs that are one heat range cooler, and turned my timing back one more degree to 32* total and 12* idling. took the pics right after I gave it a nitrous hit to 3rd gear. It floats around 12.2 on the afr gauge at WOT. I think.... can be hard to watch a gauge consistently when you have the foot on the floor hahaha
