Does anybody Know how deep that factory pan is? (Mine is hibernating on the other side of the country) That would tell if there is room to extend the filter, or if it is even needed. The filter is right close to the bottom of the stock pan when installed

Sorry, thought the body was done in 2017 and engine transplant and connectors recently. Still given the symptoms and what all is confirmed to be working, I think that bind on the strike is most likely. After 7 years, maybe a tight tolerance has just closed up with time.

In an A-body that pan would be a nightmare. The stock pan on my A500 already hangs below everything else and I had to put a 4WD pan skid on it to keep out of trouble. Maybe for a truck with lots of clearance?

Deep 904 pan? bolt pattern on perimeter is the same, correct? If it was originally for an A500 it wouldn't need the spacer to drop the filter down as the filter on an A500 is already down there. doesn't mean it wouldn't fit an A500 - only one way to check...

I will bet that the changes in drive train were significant enough to let the body sag until the subframe connectors came into play. The latch is pushing down on the strike and even though you release it, the bind is such that the latch isn't releasing from the strike. Once you get it open...

Doc, As you go to stash all this stuff, especially stuff that you REALLY want dry, our local hardware store sells really heavy giant zip loc brand sealable bags. Big enough to fit an intake manifold in the bottom.

Consider a rebuilt 318 that is a direct replacement - less hassle and even comes with a warranty. Seems a lot easier if you're not into solving puzzles and doing fabrication. I've had a succession of 70 Darts with 318s - bulletproof and easy to maintain. My current crop:
