1965 Valiant/Barracuda Quarter Panel Peak Moulding Fasteners

Re: '65 Formula S, I was trying to figure out if the one fastener that is not one of the other 9 clips that is rather a stud and nut would be attached from the factory on the rear near the tail light or up front by the door? So I looked at my '65 Valiant Signet convertible which has a similar...

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Correct, I already took that side off the Kmember and it fell out without even using a hammer. In fact, that's my own photo in post #22. I am asking about the opposite end where it is connected to the center link. Thank you.

Tha't's what I was thinking, but do you mean this works on both ends of the idler? Thank you.

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Update: Neither my local bolt/nut fastener specialty store sells castle nuts and neither does local Auto Zone. In fact, I see the Centrix brand of idler arm (sold by Rock Auto) does not even use castle nuts and cotter pins anymore (according to the photo), just a "locking nut" alone. No thanks...

No I have not bought the clips from Layson. The photo on his website look like the factory style clips to me.

Project "Chihuahua" '65 Formula S Restoration "Estilo Mexicano"

Update: Began cleaning up the clips that hold the chrome moldings for the top of the quarter panels (soak in vinegar and then Evaporust). A few actually have remnants of their original green paint/coating. The rest are rusted to various degrees. Need 9 that snap on for each side (the two with...

    Dog Attack

The dogs came out of nowhere at night and were already on top of my dog growling and biting in the span of about five seconds so no time to bribe them with treats. This neighborhood seems to be the area where unwanted pets are dumped off. Constantly raiding the garbage cans out front and one by...

    Dog Attack

The neighbors here have basically only two breeds of dogs that I can tell, if not a chihuahua then some kind of pit bull. The dogs last night jumped us in the span of about five seconds and then ran off so I could not determine the breed but I would guess were medium size around 25-30 lbs.

    Dog Attack

In the first place, when I have the chance, I usually throw a rock or two to discourage the approach of dogs loose in the street (this usually discourages them, but not always). Then I must mention that I have to be careful carrying any kind of a "weapon" to protect us due to a past incident...

    Sheer Panic--No Brakes!

My spouse knows very well how to drive a stick-shift car, but in an automatic she always brakes with her left foot (I'm not convinced that is such a good idea). And her complete stops are not very smooth at all. Then there is the time I rented a U-haul to move from Texas to California. We towed...

    Dog Attack

About ten minutes ago my Doberman (on leash as always) and I were out for our evening walk. We were attacked by two dogs in El Centenario on Calle Cuarta between Palo Fierro and Cardon (We live in Mexico near La Paz the finish line of the Baja 1000). This is about the fourth time now in the last...

    No Valiant Love?

My street legal red '65 Valiant Bracket Racer (273 CID) when I built it in Community College (1973). Same '65 Valiant today (black) after "upgraded" by the Renteria Brothers when I sold it to them 1980.

    Sheer Panic--No Brakes!

I raised the front of the '65 Signet convertible (jack stands placed) to find where the slack in the front suspension was coming from underneath (looks like an idler arm nut came loose at first glance). At the same time, I greased all the zerk fittings (they were all present and accounted for...

    Ignition Coil Installation

A mom & pop old school local auto parts store (now closed permanently) sold me a set of uniset points that i was told will fit our '65 Valiant. I have not tried to install them yet (I have my doubts they will work-no part number on them-only says "heavy duty Mylar USA" on the butt end of the...

Will This Set of Ignition Points Fit/Work on early Abody?

Back when I was studying Auto Tech at community college (circa 1973) I don't recall seeing a point set with the condenser and points as an integrated unit. I was sold these set as being compatible with our '65 Abodies. However, now that I take a second look at it, I wonder if there should be a...

Point taken, but I've had the Valiant for over 14 years now and never noticed slack in the steering until the last time out. Still weird.

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

I found (hopefully correct) torque specs for idler arm stud nuts as follows: link 40 and bracket 45. I doubt there is room for a torque wrench in there, but I can guesstimate 45 by hand. Might give it a try tomorrow. Maybe a good idea to purchase new nuts beforehand.

Sloppy Steering in '65 Valiant Manual Box

Went to work removing the idler. At first, it looked like the nut for the end that was "loose/moving" in the K-frame was somewhat inaccessible. It was a little tricky removing the cotter pin there but after that task I found I could fit the box end of a 3/4" combination wrench over the top of...

Drove the Valiant from its purchase point of Port Angelis (state of Washington) to La Paz, BCS, Mexico (with a stop of several years in California) without having had even a flat tire (2,250 miles). Factory Torsion Bar Diameter for '65 Formula S?

Forum member "grimreaper" posted this data on an old thread. I understand the '65 Barracuda Formula S had stiffer torsion bars than the standard Barracuda. I wonder which bars the Formula S was equipped with? My formula S with the 273 Commando has (had) factory A/C if that makes a difference...

How Not To Fill Grease Gun

Don't know if the zerk fittings I found on the front suspension of my 1996 Dodge Dakota were factory installed or are the result of aftermarket replacement components. Any way, my Autozone purchased grease gun (pistol grip) never seemed to work right until I watched a video on how to refill it...
