Repairs and upgrades for the charging system

The shunt is 360 brass. Less conductive than copper. .035 thick, .490 wide, and .890 active length. I started wider and reduced the width for calibration. Ohm's law for parallel resistors will get you very close. The OEM ammeter is not terribly precise, I measured 3 different ones...

    [FOR SALE] More exhaust manifolds

Nice work on the manifolds. A couple of questions Have you looked at the 53010188 manifold for the passenger side? While you are out harvesting manifolds, do you ever find any of these (the top one): Thanks for helping us keep this hobby alive! B

    D400 with a Slant, and and L-1000

As a friend said, "The only things that kill cars in CA are collisions & the EPA" The L-1000 is fairly rare, and apparently complete. Hope the right guy finds it. If I only had more space here... How about a decent D500 to round out the collection...

    D400 with a Slant, and and L-1000

Just had to share this with the members here: http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/hvo/4530647572.html A D400 Truck, with a Slant Six. And only 3k miles on it. Heck of thing to do to that little six. But it gets better. Dodge, well ahead of the pack built their COE truck with an...

Pros and cons between turbo and supercharging

OP's question was about belt drive centrifugal compressor vs exhaust drive centrifugal compressor. The answer is not much. Both take time to spool. If you overdrive the crap out of a belt drive & use a blow off if will make boost earlier - just like a turbo with a waste gate .

    318 draw through build

Nice progress Glenn. Jimmyray: Those two Martin systems are survivors for sure. The one on the wood table was a truck system, and is missing the suction side elbow from the upper intake to the compressor inlet. The second system is actually a Corvette unit. The suction elbow was a...

    318 draw through build

Thanks Scrappy! Here is the advertising for the martin system as I designed it in 1978: And a pic of one of the later production kits - I found this one for sale on e-bay a couple of years ago: Kind of fun to see them still in the market 30 years later. The system works...

Small block coolant bypass hose diameter?

Do not reduce the flow through the bypass. The bypass keeps the flow volume up in the cooling system, and reduces the thermal cycling stresses. Chrysler engineers got this part right, and they were kind of anal about cooling systems. The LA engine had two different water pumps based on...

Use a battery hold down - Please!

This one, while rather amusing to look at could have been a lot worse. Driver said she heard a loud "Pop", the car stalled and would not re-start. At first it was a mystery why the hood was so hard to open... Lucky for her the cheesy replacement terminal melted in half before...

Ok, I may have seen everything MOPAR now...

I wish I had a picture of it, last time I saw it run was 1985 or so. Several of the images on google show the exact unit, with 6 horns. The one mounted on the tower I worked near had a very visible muffler, about as long as the engine doghouse mounted horizontally about a foot above it. We...

Ok, I may have seen everything MOPAR now...

I worked about 100 yards from one of those hemi powered sirens for years. It was mounted up on a 50 foot tower & painted OD green. It spun around as it ran. Quite a contraption. I always wondered why the put a muffler on something that was built to make that much noise however. The...

    fusible link testing

A fusible link is just a copper wire. Fusible links are generally 2 gauges smaller than the circuit they protect. Made with fairly high temperature insulation that is a little thicker, sothat they look the same size as the circuit's standard wire. They are only there to take care of a...

Its Time To Build Some BOOST!

Bill: You need heat to make power. Once you get the A/F around 12:1 boost will come up. If you can get to 11.7:1 and tune from there you have less chance of roasting a piston. Consider wrapping that long header to retain some heat. Hot expanding gasses spin the turbine. B.

Clean radiator, cool engine, coolant PH, flow, fans, shrouds.

RO water should be pretty much free from dissolved solids. So treat it like distilled water. If you want drinking water from your well water, RO is great. Use RO water for evaporation make-up in the coolant recovery tank. Any closed system with a recovery tank loses some water to...

Clean radiator, cool engine, coolant PH, flow, fans, shrouds.

Hersbird: The ion exchange is a good thing in this case. Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate found in tap water are radiator killers. The carbonates drop out of solution and harden like concrete when the temperature goes up. They never go back in to solution either. This is the...

Rice Nuker: If you don't have the background or the materials to adjust the pH yourself, I would recommend using an off the shelf product like No-Rosion: http://www.no-rosion.com/technical.htm Use a 50/50 mix of distilled water & the coolant of your choice, then dose with No-Rosion...

    twin turbo 360 rpm limit?

No reason to spin over 5500 with a turbo. First you need a target horsepower number. Then you calculate the mass flow. Let's say you want 600 horsepower. To get there you will need 57 lbs of air per minute stuffed in to that 360 @ 5500 rpm VE calcs say about 12.6 psi boost should get...

    DIM Electronic Advance Ignition

cooked it! What did I do wrong?

Sounds like you had plenty of fuel. I know that probe piston has a dish. My chart shows about 9.5:1 with that piston & a 78cc head, unless you are really deep in the hole. Sounds like it is time to start adding 10% xylene or toluene to the pump gas - high compression turbos need plenty...

cooked it! What did I do wrong?

Was that AFR from a wideband in the car when it happened? With a that piston @ +.060 you need chambers at least 90cc's to get close to where you should be. What was your combustion chamber volume? 92 octane pump gas can be all over the place as well. We are switching from summer to winter...
