Hey guys, I installed an aftermarket adjustable proportioning valve in my Dart, and one of the pipe fittings is leaking. I tightened it as much as possible, still leaks, they are brand new fittings. everything else on it is fine, its just the one pipe fitting. I thought maybe try some Teflon...

I did, there was absolutely no slop at all, nice and tight. I think my spring/summer project will be tearing it apart and fixing everything on the car. It'll be fun.

Thats the plan stan, in fact I have a 727 that I am going to freshen up to put in the car instead of the 904 that is in it now. So I was already planning on pulling the tranny at some point, I guess now I have a reason.

If it was in the flex plate, then wouldn't it knock just as loud no matter what gear you are in? I'm not saying that I don't believe you guys, but it just doesn't quite add up. Like I said, the knocking is only there in certain gears, which is kinda strange.

Ok guys, I made a stethoscope and tested all kinds of different spots on the engine for noise. The engine checked out fine. I checked the fuel pump, as you guys mentioned, I checked the valve covers, the heads, none of it was making noise. I even put it on the oil pan just to see if there was...

The noise is still there with the covers off, I think it is a valve train issue with number 5. I need to pull the head off at some point and check the valves.

The tranny fluid looks fine, nice and cherry red like you mentioned. When its in gear, the only difference is that it gets slightly quieter idling, which is probably just because the RPMs go down slightly as you put in gear as well.

I changed the oil about two days before the knocking sound started, so it has nice new oil in it. I also already put the STP stuff in it, and that didn't help. Have not cut the filter open yet, I have been having some nasty weather here lately, cant go outside to do much. As far as I can tell...

I checked the firing order, they are in their correct locations. The temp on #7 was like the others, between 400 to 450 degrees. #5 was the only one I noticed with a lower temp.

Ok guys, I just fired it up and got temperature readings off of all the cylinders, and cylinder 5 was a bit lower than the others. with the engine running, cylinder 5 was at about 300 to 350 degrees, while the other 7 cylinders were at about 400 to 450. I don't think number 5 is a dead cylinder...

Next time I fire it up i will go around with a stethoscope of sort and try all those things. BTW, I indeed use zinc additives, always have so I don't know why the cam would go flat, but it is still a possibility i suppose.

Once i found that i had a burnt plug wire, I replaced all 8 of them, checked the resistance on the new ones and they are all good. when I pulled the plugs the only I noticed was that they all were black, she is running a bit rich.

When I said most were at 200 PSI, that was just me being lazy. All of them are actually different readings, but all are close to about 200. The lowest reading I had was like 190, and the highest was about 205 PSI.

Nope, no backfiring issues at all. I believe it was idling a bit high, but I don't remember what the tach said. I believe the vacuum at idle was around 20 Inches last time I checked it.

The engine was rebuilt prolly about 15-17 years ago, nowhere near fresh. However, I am the only person person to actually put some miles on the thing. I have only been driving it for about two years, and the engine has never made this sound until now.

ok, what do you suggest I look for? I have pulled the valve covers and watched it run, and everything is oiled and working just fine. No bent push rods, nothing was loose, all valves are opening and closing just fine.

interesting might have to try it, but the sound is definitely distinctly coming from the rear of the motor.

its got hydraulic lifters, i wiggled all of the rocker arms around and nothing was loose or making noise. I watched it run without the valve covers on and everything was getting oiled just fine.

the funny thing is I don't know, I didn't build this engine. Whoever built it put a competition cam of some sort in it, and Keith Black 9:1 pistons, that's all I know. Besides, I think the reason for the super high compression is carbon build up, this car was my daily driver for quite a while.
