Gunk in fuel filter, but tank is clean (1972 Valiant 225)

I cleaned off the strap clips and the hard line to make sure it was making a connection but to no avail. Good thing to check, though!

Gunk in fuel filter, but tank is clean (1972 Valiant 225)

So, somewhat unrelated, when I pulled the new sending unit back out to test it with the multimeter I didn't drop the tank or anything, just pulled the lines off and pulled it out. I put the unit back in, and just as I got the lock ring tapped into place nice and snug, gasoline started shooting...

Gunk in fuel filter, but tank is clean (1972 Valiant 225)

I did use a new one. That's too bad! I may have the old one around still. I did reattach that, but it's possible it's not making a connection. I didn't realize that's what that was. I'll clean up the strap and the hard line and see if that solves the problem. Thanks!

Gunk in fuel filter, but tank is clean (1972 Valiant 225)

Just wanted to stop back and say thanks for the input - the sending unit sock had disintegrated and the unit itself was in rough shape so we replaced it. I think it may have been the source of some of the gunk. We also blew out the lines and cleaned them with CLR. The new unit won't give us a...

Gunk in fuel filter, but tank is clean (1972 Valiant 225)

We pulled the fuel filter and blew it out to check it, and a reddish liquid came out that dried to white. It was fine grain, like clay or silt. We thought we had a rust or dirty tank issue, so dropped it to check it out, but it's sparkly clean in there. The port of the sending unit had some dark...

    Vapor/Charcoal Cannister

Well, I just pulled mine apart to start the revamp, and come to find out, the vacuum diaphragm is torn. That might explain a lot. SO, do you have a part number on that inline purge valve? I'm not sure what to search and am coming up with a lot.

[WANTED] Vapor Canister or Purge Vacuum Diaphragm ('72 Valiant)

I opened up my vapor canister tonight and saw that the purge diaphragm was torn. The canister itself has been hard to find, but maybe someone has taken theirs out and can at least spare the diaphragm. Original canister # 3577584. Pics here: Dropbox - Valiant Canister (That may not work, I...

    Vapor/Charcoal Cannister

Yeah, I suppose the vacuum-activated purge isn't necessary, right? Though I think I read that it helps with hot start issues, or starting issues in general. The purge port (to the PCV) on my canister is small, but the out you have is large, and it says in one of the manuals it should be large...

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

Thanks everyone! We've got a working 1920 coming in the mail (with float, baffle, and spring) and will see if we can get her running again. We'll probably look into the Super Six in the future.

    Vapor/Charcoal Cannister

I don't, I just saw some on eBay a while ago that had been pulled off Wranglers I believe. But My Tech How-To for the Carbon Vapor Canister - International Full Size Jeep Association mentions Standard Motors Part CP3045 as a suitable replacement, with mods. Again, this is for Jeeps, but I'm...

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

I'm able to idle, but it's cutting out when I coast or sometimes just AFTER an idle. There are some similar threads on here that I'll be looking at to troubleshoot it when we get this or another carb back on. This was something that needed to be done, regardless. We noticed the fuel filter was...

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

If he's ValiantK360 I just messaged. If not, let me know and I'll PM you my contact info. Thanks! And I edited my initial post to clarify that it wasn't a brass float - pishta asked before that edit was made. :D

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

So when you say you can find this stuff at a junkyard, do you mean someplace like LKQ or Martin's where you can pull your own stuff, or are there flat-out JUNK YARDS out there? (I told you I'm new to this, ha!) I'm not sure how well I'd do at that - I wouldn't know which vehicles to look in, or...

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

It's nitrophyl and fuel soaked, as bbrroowwnn suggested. I wish it were brass!

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

Thanks, but as my post said they don't actually have the part. As to your comment about adjusting the float level, I have read about people setting an different float level to compensate for a soaked or improperly weighted float, but haven't been able to confirm that it works. It doesn't sound...

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

Thanks, I'll check again. I have the 7.5 (it weighed in at almost 9 so we're assuming, anyway).

Holley 1920 missing parts - time to swap?

TL;DR - My carb is missing parts - should I swap it for a new 2 bbl, search for parts, or buy another used 1920? My budget is about $250. We started a rebuild on my 1920 and it is missing the baffle, float spring, and pump return spring. The float is also bad (edit: nitrophyl, fuel soaked -...

    Vapor/Charcoal Cannister

Sorry if the Jeep articles are confusing, but yes, this is going on a '72 Valiant, not a Jeep. It just looks like Jeep owners have faced this same issue. I do have a vacuum activated purge valve, so need the fourth port.

    Vapor/Charcoal Cannister

It looks like that one only has 2 ports, but the Jeep one has 4. The AC Delco one (above) Or check out the Jeep one, along with this other write-up about retrofitting a new part: My Tech How-To for the Carbon Vapor Canister - International Full Size Jeep Association Maybe we could try...

    Vapor/Charcoal Cannister

Great thread! There really isn't much chatter about this out there. Just bought a '72 Valiant and noticed gas dumping from this thing. Took it out, and it was completely empty inside. The charcoal had disappeared and the filter was gone, too. We're thinking the gas issue has to do with the...
