    curious about valve lash setting/check

lost my post, so do-over. thanks to all. I ran the car like yellow rose suggested. still a 'slight' tick, but that can wait until another day, if needed. here's the big news: found a phone number from 08 in the receipts for the car. called and left a message and the old owner/builder called back...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

alright then, took about 7 minutes to get the oil running and the ticking to (almost) stop. I took it up to the 3500 rpm's Rusty, but afterwards there was still a little tick. it's dark, cold, and I'm tired. I will get to it tomorrow and do some other checking. thank you ALL for your help, your...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

you definitely helped, I was the only one making it complex. after doing it several times, it really is 'so simple' as you say. I was being WAY too meticulous finding the 'drag' on the spin. really helped when I started looking to take the slack out with the push rod going 'up and down'. you...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

thanks guys, all of the valves were almost spot on to last night's settings. still had some pressure in the 5/7/7, but set the same. putting the rest back together, then getting to bed at a decent time tonight. thanks so much, I'll let you all know how she runs, and just how long it takes to get...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

believe he meant from the chart yellow rose, at least that's what I took from it. I knew what he meant, so it's all good. thanks though, we all make mistakes, so it's nice to have someone else keeping an eye out.....and I'm leading the pack on mistakes! LOL

    curious about valve lash setting/check

and, yes sir, I did check to be TDC. on compression stroke, watched valves as turned over, the timing mark is on, and the rotor is in the correct position. :)

    curious about valve lash setting/check

thanks 69, much appreciated. I have already started and almost half way through and finding last night's settings to be almost exact as what I'm setting tonight. I am using the push rod "up and down" (thanks Rusty) until there is no slack (making mental note where it is), then backing off and...

I'm going to go through it again tonight, thanks for the help Rusty.

    curious about valve lash setting/check

that's what I meant, it was late for me. do you have any input on why I would have pressure on those 3 valves? intake 5, intake 7, exhaust 7 I'm probably wrong, but my thought was.....those 3 valves may have gotten oil when I started it the other night? but I'm just guessing there.

yes sir, that's the one I'm using.

    curious about valve lash setting/check

alright guys, this is what I found (and did it numerous times to check), back and forth on the push rod vs. spinning for drag, and it might be my touch here, but as I said...numerous times, the back and forth on the push rod seems to get me 1/2 hour clocking earlier, consistently! don't know if...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

Kim, I could actually see it leaking, and it was coming out right where it was warped. once I took some material off, I could see it plain as day.

    curious about valve lash setting/check

what's the reasoning behind 'it's not for everyone' 69? just curious
  24. oldmusclelover

    curious about valve lash setting/check

Bob, I couldn't see it with a straight edge, but as soon as I started taking material down, sure enough, bowed from hole to hole. thank you, got it cleaned up.

    curious about valve lash setting/check

69, this is the second time it's leaked on me (probably due to me over tightening), so I stopped and bought some water pump & thermostat housing gasket maker. I was going to use that, unless I hear it's not the way to go. I didn't get a gasket, but can make one, have material. and as to...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

Rusty, I value your opinion. you first said to adjust 1/4 - 1/2, so I went 3/8 (in between), thought that was safe. I did a bunch of reading in here and (correct me if I'm wrong) too much may float a valve at high rpm's? that's why I wanted to set it low, as you suggested. I may have been...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

thank you, do you have a suggestion for the t-stat housing? I have an assortment of gasket material and was thinking to use the rubber-cellulose (calls out for water/coolant). the Edelbrock intake is a nasty looking casting at the thermostat (pitting and such). I can run to the parts store if...

    curious about valve lash setting/check

alright then, what should I do then, 3/4 of a turn? I'll do what you recommend and start her and let he run. by the way, I keep having problems with the t-stat housing leaking. doesn't seem to be anything other than the gasket. should I make my own, and if so, what would you recommend for...
