340 Oil Priming Question First Start

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Ok fair enough. I get you and understand. Thank you. Last question for a while then…. How do I definitively determine if I have sold or hydraulic lifters without pulling the intak off?

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

So guys what is the difference between the shaft with 2 holes per rocker and one? Could this be my oiling issue?

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Thanks! That would be great to reuse them. What about only having 1 hole as opposed to two? I am not getting oil to flow to the top end.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Ok so my rocker shafts are wrong and beat up. My rockers are galled (some). At a minimum I need to replace a lot of the components. Looks like I am running a solid lifter set up. I don’t know the spring pressure nor can I measure it. I don’t know the required rocker ratio and never worked on a...

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Don’t see any retainer or clip unless it’s perfectly circular and then I am not sure if that could even be a clip in there. For sure no square clip like the one you have shown. No compression noted when pushing on the lifters.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Wow great definative post! Figures one rocker is gauled the rest look clean. So what’s the story on the banana shafts? Were they made like this? Are they no longer available new?

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Thanks for the definitive response. Yup I have the wrong shafts. One rocker is gauled the others perfect. The picture I posted is the best I have as the intake is back on. I ASSUMED they were hydraulic but I am NOT familiar enough to have determined this by sight. Is there another way to tell...

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Maybe I read this incorrectly. Are you saying that the shaft is not the correct one for the 273 rockers? The rockers do have two holes indeed. Not sure about any banana grooves?

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Any sticky or link on how and where etc I can make this shaft groove mod?

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Does the lack of a groove explain my oiling deficiency? The whole reason I am at this point is because I am seeing little to no oil coming out of the rocker arms. Not a drip on many arms. We jointly found that the passenger shaft IS REVERSED and will need to be corrected. However now I am...

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

When I installed the shaft I did it with the alignment notch pointing towards the center of the motor for the driver side notch in front. Then I verified all the oiling holes pointing down. There is nothing else I can do with respect to geometry or alignment…..

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

So I have removed the shaft and inspecting it. Are the rockers compatible with this rod? The rockers have teo small holes. Do the small lifter holes have to align with the hole on the shaft at some point to get flow? Does this all look right?

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Driver side front of shaft. Rear is completely smooth. It’s faint but it’s definitely the right size but not a notch more like an imprint.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Hey I have no background info on this motor. I bought it as is. I don’t know what cam is in it but I did bore scope the cylinders and found 0.030 over TRW 12:1 slugs with what looked like clean tops and the walls looked good. It ran when I started work on the body. This is a flat tappet set up...

Source for rocker shaft end seals/freeze plugs

I spoke to Chrysler and they are not producing the rocker shaft pressed end seals/freeze plugs. They have not said that they will again. Spoke with Mancini Racing. They have been out of stock for 8 months to a year. No one has stock left anywhere I found a dorman part that might fit. Anyone...

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Summary: 1. Couldn’t get flow at rocker arms during manual priming of the oil pump. 2. 60 psi was held continuously through slow crank rotation. 3. #2 and #4 rocker bolts removed and confirmed high volume flow on each side. 4. Passenger rocker shaft was reversed. Update: 1. With the crank...

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Your right! The shaft is the wrong way. Can Should I reverse the shaft and maintain the rocker positions/orientations? After very careful inspection I found a very low relief notch in the driver shaft towards the front pointing to the engine centerline as the fsm states it should. See pic

Doing that now. I just thought about that too! They looked clean. For the alignment the shaft small holes face down towards the motor right?

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Looks like Chrysler is no longer making the rocker shaft end freeze plugs. Mancini is out Year One out the dealerships are out. Nobody has them…..

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Another up date. WE HAVE FLOW! I removed the #2 and #4 rod bolts and bam oil flow out both sides when aligned. This must mean clogged passages in the rocker shaft right? I am pulling them now.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

I did check for rocker shaft assembly orientation. The passenger end groove is in front pointing inward. See first pic. However the driver side shaft has no groove on either side. Smooth ring….see pic 2. This is not a stock motor.

340 Oil Priming Question First Start

Ok I filled each side up and retorqued to 16ftls. We maintained 60 psi and I turned over the crank very slowly for 10 minutes 4 cycles of Ll the valves. Nothing out the holes on either side. I guess it’s time to completely remove the rockers.
