right beside the freeze plug I think a 65 273 should have a bolt in the timing cover. 318 no bolt. bolt hole in gasket none in cover or block.

    318 Issues

Look down in the carb and move the linkage to full throttle, gas should be seen coming from the accelerator pump nozzles. If not try pouring 1/2 oz of gas down the carb and try to start. Check spark from coil by removing coil wire from dist cap and placing wire about 1/2" from ground a crank...

    Po' Boy 360 power

I ran the same engine trans combination in my 72 dart ten years ago. Completely stock as removed from a Polara. With 4.10 gears and a 28" slick it ran 13.90's @ about 100mph. Changed to a Holley 500 two barrel, went 13.60,s @ 102. Most consistent combination I ever ran. "X" or "J" heads are...

Driver side has one plug wire holder on flat part at the rear, other three wires are routed under the exhaust manifold. passenger side has a bracket above the rear two plugs that holds the plug wires about two inches away...

    Timing indicator- 70 340

Odds are it was the one that bolted on with the bottom two bolts of the water pump. If you plan to use an after market vibration damper, you would need a later timing chain cover and a water pump with the inlet hose on the right side. If you are restoring then you need the bolt on pointer or...

    increase HP on a 273

My book says: Stall 1950-2150 rear gear ratio 2.93 or 3.23. My opinion: Small cubes + adequate engine building = good gas milage and better than normal performance. Ask the leaning engine fellers.

What am I missing? Distributor issue...

The slot in the oil pump drive should point at the left front intake manifold bolt when the engine is at tdc for #1or #6 cylinder. Dosen't have to but should.

What am I missing? Distributor issue...

Dig thru your left over parts and find a rod 8.25" long with a six sided shape on one end and a gear on the other. Drop it into the hole that the distributor goes in, (GEAR END UP). Ad distributor and go.

    318 capabilities??

    Water pump pulley question

The alt should line up with the water pump pulley. Four grooves on crank were 1 p/s 1 air pump 2 ac/ alt. in that order p/s next to block. Non ac cars had one belt for the water pump and alt, one belt for p/s.

    4 rockers are different

I find the only way to accurately select rockers is with a dial indicator and light springs on the valves. I just checked a mocked up 318 stock valve train that only produced .358" lift at the valve.

    help for the chevy guy

The ports on 318 heads have very inconsistent castings from port to port on the same head. I scrapped two dozen heads for this reason. I finely found apair off a truck that look decent as cast. The 318 aftermarket manifolds do have aport mismatch on 318 heads. The 273 heads are the best bet...
