I have a '70's era 9 inch converter in my 340 Duster. It feels quite mushy at low speeds. Stand on it,locks up and goes.

My brother had a friend back in the '70's that owned a street/strip 350 powered '66 chevelle. It had one of those vega converters in it. The converter worked really well without issues.

The mid 70's has 4 pinion steel planetaries. It is the best if you need a non lockup 999. If you need a lockup 999 then go with the 80's and up.

The mid 70's are the best 999's with the 5 clutch front drum and non lockup.

I remember a buddy of mine switched from a 3.23 one wheel peel to a 3.55 sure-grip and you could notice a difference. Livened the car right up.
