    340 help

KB9GIB, do you have a pic of the casting date/engine size on the side of the block? Im curious as to the casting date, August 1967??

    408 Stroker

I've built a bunch of small blocks over the years. It costs just about as much money to build that 318 as it does the 360. I guess that's why I got five 318s on stands here now....LOL So, IMHO, IF you already have the 360 and many of the parts for it, build the 360 and take advantage of the...

    408 Stroker

Both of those '72 Swingers are really nice, guys. Love that body style. IMHO, do the build all at once for the reasons stated above. But really, you need to answer to yourself as to what you're really looking for out of the build in order to engineer it to meet your goals. That ancient old...

Stroke old 340 or new crate engine

Yep. That's the exact layout plan for my '73 360 block right now. I got the pistons and cam on order. Inquired about the heads earlier this evening. I'm not stroking it, just .030" over on the pistons. It's going in a '73 Dart Sport for primarily street use...and an occasional pass down the...

    Started the long, arduous Journey

Finally, got back into the shop tonight. Jeez, nothing going on around here for weeks, I start working on this thing and it's just been one thing after another...steady busy....LOL Well, my first surprise: That block is NOT 0.030" over, it's standard 4.00" +/- 0.002". From the block number...

oil COnsumption until 1 qt low

nm9, I'm a late comer to the thread, but reading thru this: It sounds like he's got the proper bore clearance for the pistons that were used? The OP doesn't have a windage tray in it. It's not leaking it, it's burning it. Maybe improper final bore finish for the rings that were used? Thus...

    Started the long, arduous Journey

Biff, I was originally planning on it, but after reading about Greg's build and then the recent article in Mopar Muscle regarding $4000 450hp build , I think I'm going to duplicate MM build, or do something very similar to it. It would save me a few pesos as well going that route. The car is...

    Started the long, arduous Journey

Yes. I did that about 15 years ago before storing it. I had also ground off all the casting flash in the valleys and oil return holes, primed the outside for paint and then Glyptal the lifter valley. Glypal is pretty tough stuff on the rough casting surfaces, but definitely not wanted on any of...

    Started the long, arduous Journey

Today, I pulled one of my 360 blocks out of about 15+ years of storage to begin the build for my '73 Dart Sport. Needless to say, it was absolutely filthy, full of mud wasp nests, spider webs and just plain overall nasty and dirty; but still in good shape. Got it on the engine stand and fired...

Which 360 Block to use: LA or Magnum?

I can't disagree, but gotta work with what's available. But yeah, I was at the U.S. Nationals in Indy last month. That particular NHRA race is mainly sponsored by Chevrolet so they had a big display on the vendor-side of the track. I was looking at their parts, engines, etc. they had laid out...

Which 360 Block to use: LA or Magnum?

Thanks, Greg. Much appreciated. Yep. Just read it. BTW, love your early A cars. Jeez, based on your build, I could probably get close to 450 hp without even stroking it. Just go with those EQ heads, cam, intake & a decent set of pistons with a .030 overbore to clean it up. I'm thinking that...

Which 360 Block to use: LA or Magnum?

Pretty darn good advice and I fully agree with it all. Thanks much!

    Is this a blind hole???

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it gets "wet". I think if you shine a light in the block at the right angle, you'll see that it's not "blind".

Which 360 Block to use: LA or Magnum?

Thanks guys for all the great input. FWIW, I've not been messing with my cars for quite awhile now even though I do go to Carlisle every year just to drool all over myself...LOL. Now, I got a little time & money (retired), I want to get back into em....besides, I got this little ***** of a...

Which 360 Block to use: LA or Magnum?

Yes, the EQ heads I'm using have the LA intake pattern as I have nothing but LA intakes at my disposal.

    67' 318 crank in a 69' 340

"...Put in the smaller 318 rods with the KB167 pistons and you end up with 2105 grams; now you can take weight off of the crank..." Which is exactly what I'd do IF I were in the OP's situation, and with what he wants out of the economy build.....I believe that combo has been done before... :)

Which 360 Block to use: LA or Magnum?

I haven't been on FABO for quite a while now, and I don't believe I've ever started a thread on here before. Being a pretty old fart, I've found it fascinating how engine tech has kinda left me "in the dust" so to speak over the past few years. What was once considered "gospel" in some areas...

    Duplicolor paint by the pint?

You can do what 4spddragtop said, but instead of going to Lowes or the Despot, you could go directly to an automotive paint supplier (PPG for instance) and they can match it exactly using a computer/scanner built specifically for that purpose...or they may even have the original paint code to...

fixing stripped carb bolt hole on intake

My neighbor busted both bolts that hold the starter on his 350 ci GMC. No shop within 100 miles of here would touch it for less than $1000. Since he knows that I don't work on GM crap, he had to beg me for help. I refused twice and then relented. I towed that nasty thing to my shop, moved the...

Looking to build me a stroker...

Hey, I resemble them "X" heads....lol I had these checked out before shelving them in the corner of my shop and they appeared to be fine. I was thinking of cleaning them up, do a little porting, then using these on my next "street stroker" project, but those RHS heads sound pretty nice.

    timing a 318 w/a 495 lift cam!!!!!

...I can see this is going to be a long day.... :) What he meant "by shaved heads" is the milling down of the the head surface where the head mates to the block (the intake manifold surface should also be done as well to maintain proper engine geometry so the intake manifold bolt holes will...
