From One A-body to Another (Air Conditioning)!

Thanx for posting that Dave, in all the years of scrounging parts off these cars I never noticed there was a difference. So the blower on a heater only car is actually mounted from the inside of the passenger compartment. Hard to believe they actually punched two different firewalls, but they did.

From One A-body to Another (Air Conditioning)!

Rest assured a non numbers matching 318 will not be worth any less than a numbers matching six.

From One A-body to Another (Air Conditioning)!

I think the only difference in the firewall is the cut out for the Evap Tubes, you can use the seal from your donor car as a template to cut out the firewall if need be. I don't remember the rad supports being different between air and non air cars, just the radiator and the mandatory shroud if...

    r134a or freon

What year is your vehicle? My 73 Duster has a factor installed thermostat, it is mounted on the passenger side of the evaparator case. Mine is adjustable too, which was required after I got a replacement copper evap form that same company in Tampa. The new one worked too efficiently for the...

    A/C Belt Length?

Excellent! Don't you just love when they accidently give you the correct part. Savor it:)

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

My Pep boys radiator is going on 11 yrs old and this evening I noticed it seeping a little coolant where the core meets the top tank. I dug out the receipt and low and behold they had special ordered this rad for me way back when and they wrote 72 Duster on the order ticket instead of 73. Part...

    A/C Belt Length?

Schnappa, you are probably better off to go ahead and buy the belts listed for the car and check them for fit out. That is what I ended up doing on my 360 several years ago as I had pieced together a factory set up. Don't get discouraged if you get the wrong length, it is rare I get the right...

    '73 Dart Evaporator Coil

Those are getting pretty hard to find. I sent my leaking core to an outfit in Tampa, Fl and they made me a new one out of copper. It has been ten years since I installed it and no leaks. Every once in a while I see a surplus one pop up on ebay. Here is where I got mine done...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

I always wondered if that rad that Pep Boys gave me for my Duster was the "correct" one. It was the same tank and core dimension as my six cylinder piece with air, only difference was placement of the the radiator hose inlet/outlets. It's a 2 row unit so it cools just fine. I suspect pep boys...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Drop dead gorgeous car!!!!!!!!! If I cleaned mine up that good it would never get driven:) BTW, I drove the Duster into work this morning and the car is much quieter with that viscous fan. No shroud rubs or weird vibrations, I guess I pulled it off. I guess the last vestige of the slant six...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Thanx for the reply Johnny Dart. I think the fan came off of a slant six Aspen, it's been too long since I picked it up at the boneyard. My reasoning for picking it was if it had enough room on a slant six it should fit my v/8 conversion. Fan is 18-1/4" diameter, the same diameter I think for...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

No offense taken John. That looks really good and also really tight. Is that a small block engine? Looks like the same tank as my radiator. I wish I had tried the 2765 first but I suspect maybe something is different because that jag unit is less than 1/2" shorter than the one I have. I...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

I have about 1/2" clearance between clutch and rad. A v/8 shroud would be nice as that slant six shroud is tight. I can still grind and shift the shroud a bit more than I did ten years ago for the fixed fan.

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Here are a couple shots showing how close the steel slant six piece is compared to the viscous unit. Diameter and fan pitch are about the same. The steel one does not flex obviously and has seven blades instead of five. I once took this fan off my slant six and drove it without the fan, could...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Some of my many fans, heh, heh. Couldn't resist it. These are the three fans I monkeyed with over the last ten years. The slanting six on the far left, center is the now modified 4140442 fan that is on the car and a 20" flex fan sent to me by some guy in SD that I met on allpar who claimed it fit...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

The slant six shroud has a 20" hole in it for the fan but with it flipped upside down to line up with the v-8 water pump centerline is a tad off center as it was with the all steel fan. I wasn't happy with the clearances so I moved the radiator up by loosening the 4 mounting bolts and lifting...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

The fins do clear the rad tank by a good 1/2". I tried flexing them into the rad and they don't move that much. Mounting it was a snap with the open holes on the new clutch. I just put one screw in the hole closest to the floor and let the clutch hang on it so I could grab the top hole with...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Because my radiator tank is over 3-1/2" wide, I don't think that Jag clutch would pull it close enough to the engine with that fan. My fan height was 1-1/2" versus jag at approx. 1.09". I removed close to an inch off the blade tips. Pretty sure the jag unit was not the answer on this car...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Thanx Mullinax, I gave it a high effort. Hope this helps with anybody else trying to fit a fan to a 73 Duster. Seems like anything I buy for this car has to be "made to fit".:)

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

With the worn out clutch attached I give it a spin while clamped in the vice, she spins quite freely with almost no fluid left inside and no shakes! After a fresh coat of high gloss enamel I attached the new clutch to her and she is ready to go for a spin! With the trimming performed and the...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Here is a shot of one of the blade tips after being stripped, it has a little tiny mopar logo and another part number, probably for the blade only, assembly number is the 4140442 number I suppose. If you look closely you can see diamond shaped tool marks on the blade which were made during...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

I found this Imperial thermal standard duty fan clutch at Advance Auto(shuck's, Kragen), part number 215049, same dimensions as Hayden 2705. Hayden has the Imperial catalog on their website too, and the 215049 says "Made in the USA", Yeah!!! Part cost $29.99. Total height remained the same...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

All of the pieces were the same size, that's a good sign I guess. The viscous fluid in the fan clutch should help absorb vibration from any slight imbalance I may have caused from trimming. The blades are aluminum which should make slight variances even less critical.

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Well I couldn't take it. I have drug this fan around for ten years, it's been in three different atticks and I am going to make this thing fit! I made a template, rattle canned the tips orange and hack sawed the tips off. I used a new blade and made sure it was pulled super tight to avoid any...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Dusterdon, the template thing is already in the works:), in case I screw it up or decide to be lazy Flex-A-Lite has a good looking 6 blade fan with only 2-3/16" fan blade pitch versus my mopar at 2-1/2". The Flex-A-Lite part#5718 is an 18-1/4" viscous fan and has the blade tips pre-cropped...

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Thanx again for the info 7demon2, this is extremely helpful. It would definitely be easier to find a fan that fits than notch the one I have.

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Thanx, I will look into that too, have not been able to find much A-Body stuff at the local wrecking yards in some time, wish I had gone on the hunt for this ten years ago when I swapped this engine in. I measured it this morning, the Rad. is a 22" piece.

    Viscous Fan Won't Fit

Yeah, I think it is the 2765 unit for an 86 Vanden Plas. I heard the snout hole is larger but it may come with an adapter for the smaller mopar water pump shaft.
