I run my MSD dizzy locked at 36* with 11.5 - 1 compression. I wired in this little jewel that takes 20* out of the timing during start up only. Cranks right up - even when hot. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8984 .

It sounds like either the converter has gone south or the wrong converter. If someone placed a later model lockup converter in it, it will die when placed in gear. That's what it sounds like is happening if it idles fines in neutral or park... 0.02....

Is the torque converter locking it down?

I just installed a new section of rollcage in my car yesterday and I am running the MSD 6A box. I removed the - wires from the box and went to work. It was fine when I finished the job and hooked it back up. Cranked fine, ran fine. I didn't disconnect the battery at all..............
