    Want to improve ignition....

I did the HEI Ignition Upgrade last spring and it gives me a hotter spark than the Mopar EI system. I know it's a lot hotter because I can run much leaner cruising fuel mixtures than I ever could with the old system. The HEI system is extremely reliable and replacement parts (if ever needed)...

    Electronic ignition upgrade

The simplest and best upgrade from points to electronic ignition is the HEI upgrade. No need for expensive EI conversion kits and you can source pretty much everything you need from junkyard parts. I originally upgraded from points to mopar EI and last year upgraded to HEI. The HEI system...

To Ballast or not to Ballast?

To Ballast or not to Ballast?

Depending upon the primary winding resistance, the coil may or may not need a ballast resistor. If you're using the coil that is matched with a Mopar ECU and ballast resistor, you will overheat the coil if you run the coil for more than a few minutes without a ballast resistor using a Mopar...

To Ballast or not to Ballast?

The ballast resistor keeps the coil from overheating due to excess low RPM current. I would use the ballast resistor if you're planning to run the engine for more a few minutes. It would be simpler to use an HEI module instead for testing. See HEI Upgrade.

HEI conversion is turning into a train wreck

The HEI conversion is very straightforward and reliable. I just upgraded my 65 Barracuda in June and it works perfectly but I used a GM HEI module and ran a 12g ground wire from the battery to the module. See HEI Ignition Upgrade.

    GM HEI ignition module

Besides needing a good ground, the HEI module also needs a good heat sink. Make sure you smear some thermal paste between the bottom of the module and what you're attaching it to. See HEI Ignition Upgrade.

    Mopar 'HEI' Drop in distributors.

The Bosch BIM024 module appears to also be a variable dwell ignition module that is similar to the 4-pin HEI module. If you already have an electronic ignition distributor, it is straight forward to replace the Mopar ignition module with a 4-pin HEI or BIM024. I think GM parts are much easier...
